So occasionally the odd christian's a little over the top. Does that really prove anything though dude? I have a christian friend who lives in a real balanced, loving way and has brought up her kids real good. Her faith kinda anchors the things that are groovy in her life. I ain't religious or nothin myself - just don't think it's all bad dude. Although i did get a little freaked whan i talked to her 20 year old daughter about yoga and got frozen out by the mum because it's 'the work of the devil'. But hey, everybody has their weak points, i mean I don't like peas for example and they're supposed to be real good for you.

Maybe you're right, there is a lot of crap comes out of religions. Somehow i still feel unfcomfortable when dudes on this forum kinda gang up on Christianity and what have you. Not that i have any real reason to defend religion - catholicism fucked me up - but if it's someone else's thing i just think - let em live the way they want, by the values they want to have. It impinges on other people from time to time and of course in some islamic countries stuff gets really heavy but i still think - fight the sexism and the repression and so forth rather than the religion itself. and a big thing for me is to keep an open heart towards other people even if they behave like total assholes sometimes. i mean that is the way of the dude isn't it?

It *is* the way of the dude... but anything/anyone that is so blatantly wrong/silly/stupid, etc. is just so EASY a target!

When we point out the "Good" christians or muslim we are simply picking the ones who adhere LEAST to their own religion.
If your friend was truly a Christian she would be bound by the admonitions to murder her neighbor if they violate the sabbath (for instance). Amongst other stuff. And I insist on calling them on this stuff. It's THEIR book. There are tons of things like that in black and white, in the bible. But since it's religion it gets a pass. There are no moves that I'm aware of to remove anything like the support for slavery or child abuse from the bible by any of the religions that follow it.
And every week Catholic go to church where the priest holds up the bible and they all mumble nicene creed.
It's their book. It's not out of bounds to point out how completely fucked up it is.

The sexism and repression IS the religion.
It's spelled out in scripture. How can we be surprised when the results are exactly what is spelled out?
Just because there are people who DON'T follow it and live a decent life while calling themselves by a name does nothing but give cover to the true adherents.
In my personal opinion we have a majority of people who adhere and defend their religion NOT AS RELIGION but as culture. I've known lots of people who call themselves Catholic or Protestant or whatever and will defend the religion and have NEVER read the bible and know zero about the history of that religion.
But they were raised that way. Day to day their behavior has absolutely nothing to do with anything that the religion preaches. (Obviously since they don't actually know what it is that the religion preaches)
But they would insist that it does. I guess it's beamed into their brains from heaven or something.

I think you're being a little hard on the christians dude. Not all of them are fundamentalists and just because some aren't doesn't mean they haven't read their own book. I think most modern christians are mainly into the vibe of the new testament whereas most people criticising christianity point to the dodgy stuff in the old testament which plenty of christian dudes really aren't hung up about.

I think you're being a little hard on the christians dude. Not all of them are fundamentalists and just because some aren't doesn't mean they haven't read their own book. I think most modern christians are mainly into the vibe of the new testament whereas most people criticising christianity point to the dodgy stuff in the old testament which plenty of christian dudes really aren't hung up about.

Nah, BD is just saying "Take a closer look at your religion, cause it's fucked up". There's no such thing as a religious moderate; they provide cover (and an excuse) for the ones who REALLY take it seriously, so they are in fact complicit in their wrongdoings.

You could say that kindergarten teaching provides cover for paedophiles, and in some cases that will be true. Does that mean you get rid of kindergarten?
Once you get rid of kindergarten all the kids will be home-educated and that's just providing fertile ground for fundamentalist indoctrination.
