What does it take to be a Dudeist?

Hmmmm...I spent time in NI when I was in the military...bad times dudes...bad times!

I know you're being flippant but I spent time in the Middle East too.  Some bad times...then good times.

There is a NI connection with the Mid East... (well Libya) ... where Ghaddafi suppied PIRA with arms...this caused me many tactical landings and long shifts on guard duty in many shitty and cold places.

Maybe think before you post Jgiffin dude. I lost buddies face down in the mud because of that shit. And you have managed to trivialise it.

Maybe you need to spend 5 years checking your car for IED's and looking behind you every 2 minutes in case you are being followed. Maybe you need to experience a tactical landing (flying into an airfield at speed then dropping down from 10000 feet to landing and stopping in a great hurry). Maybe you need to realise that NI is not all about potatoes and shamrocks.

I'm pretty sure you didn't think about what you said. But I'd like you to maybe do so now.

Ceasar Dude, you had it right with the "flippant" thing. My intent was just to play off the distance between the two areas and juxtapose the regions' starches of choice - nothing about substantive conflicts. No physical (or other) harm intended. The post I referenced, which used NI and the MI as examples, didn't link the two in any way and I didn't mean to, either. Hell, I didn't even know there was a link. And, as you imply, Libya is a MI country on some levels but quite apart from the MI, too, in many respects.

Anyway, man, I could have thought and thought until my thinker was thunk out and not anticipated that post would offend someone or cause them angst. Since it did, though, I'm sorry. It sounds like you know where I'm coming from so hopefully that's enough. But, to be fair, I'm going to make a lot more bad jokes, non-omniscient posts, and motley mistakes in the future. If anyone else gets offended, I hope they let me know, too. I don't mind offending people, but only when I mean to. This wasn't that.

Rev Klaus (my very good friend) is very much a "happy with being ordained and just getting on with his life" type Dudeist. I don't see any contradiction as a Dudeist living like that.

I consider myself a Dudeist, but I fucking. hate. proselytizing. of. any. kind. I fucking hate it. I've lost friends very dramatically who want to suddenly discuss the state of my eternal soul. Fuck off with that. If someone were to ask, I would discuss Dudeism with them, but fuck off if there's some sort of expectation on me to convert anyone.

We all like to discuss and dissect the meaning and symbolism of every little detail in the movie, but how about one big, overriding theme that pretty much governs the relationship between The Dude and Walter? How about the fact that they seem to be polar opposites on politics, personal aggression, and greed, yet they never try to convert one another and instead coexist as equals and friends?

Why can't Dudeism strive to be the first religion in the history of the world that doesn't pressure its followers to actively recruit others and win over hearts and minds?

I always kind of saw it as Donny and Walter establish the spectrum and he Dude walks the middle way within that spectrum. Not too hot not too cold, not too aggressive, not too fearful.

My model for Engaged Dudeism is based on the work of the Zen Peacemakers and Jeff Bridges, Engaged Buddhists, not evangelicals or Mormons or something like that. In that I mean for us to use our Dude-ness to have a positive influence on the world at large, not to convert the world at large.

I wonder if what was meant, was what qualifies a dude? Are there criteria? Like the questioning titles of books by another dude (Do you abide and Am I a dude), are there a list of dudely virtues eg, Acceptance, Benevolence, Integrity, Discipline and Empathy? (I know, A.B.I.D.E), though a good dude and thurrah, wouldn't need to ask this of themselves, they would just be. I guess reaching that point, would be like dudevana, or such stage of personal dudevolution. Maybe this should be a topic for another thread, maybe the DHAM?

Not at all, dude, Thai stick's over there. I just thought it was odd that there are blank sections like the DHAM.

I guess there could be a distinction between a dude and a great dude, like a virtuous nature, or a great humanitarian for instance. Most, are quite content to be happy with the life we have, with what we've got and who we are, doing what we will and harming none. Doing good deeds and having a positive attitude, while keeping said life tied together, makes a dude in my book.

Some are on an eternal quest for dudeness, while others have it  thrust upon them. Generally finding a good balance and striving to be centred is a start I guess, all IMO.
