Dudeism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dudeism is a religion whose primary objective is to promote a philosophy and lifestyle represented by the character of "The Dude" (Jeff Bridges) in the Coen Brothers' 1998 film The Big Lebowski.[1]

Founded in 2005 by Oliver Benjamin, a journalist based in Los Angeles, California and Chiang Mai, Thailand,[2] Dudeism's official organizational name is The Church of the Latter-Day Dude. As of February 2011 over 100,000[3] "Dudeist Priests" had been ordained via the church.

Although Dudeism primarily makes use of iconography and narrative from The Big Lebowski, adherents believe that the Dudeist worldview has existed since the beginnings of civilization, primarily to correct societal tendencies towards aggression and excess. They list individuals such as Lao Tzu, Epicurus, Heraclitus, The Buddha, and the pre-ecclesiastical Jesus Christ as examples of ancient Dudeist prophets.[4] More recent antecedents include pillars of American Transcendentalism such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman and humanists such as Kurt Vonnegut and Mark Twain.[5]

The Dudeist belief system is essentially a modernized form of Taoism purged of all of its metaphysical and medical doctrines.[citation needed] Dudeism advocates and encourages the practice of "going with the flow" and "taking it easy" in the face of life's difficulties, believing that this is the only way to live in harmony with our inner nature and the challenges of interacting with other people.[citation needed] It also aims to assuage feelings of inadequacy that arise in societies which place a heavy emphasis on achievement and personal fortune.[citation needed] Consequently, simple everyday pleasures like bathing, bowling, hanging out with friends are seen as far preferable to the accumulation of wealth and the liberal spending of money as a means to achieve happiness and spiritual fulfillment.[6]

The Church of the Latter-Day Dude launched its official publication, The Dudespaper, in the fall of 2008. A Dudeist holy book, The Tao Dude Ching went online in July 2009. It was renamed The Dude De Ching in December 2009 to avoid being confused with an upcoming book by Benjamin called The Tao of the Dude. The Dude De Ching is a reinterpretation of the Tao Te Ching using dialogue and story elements from The Big Lebowski.[7]

I was just wondering if we could at least flesh this out a bit, or if not do even better?

I nominate you, sir meekon, to do the fleshing.  Whatever you choose, i will support. I don't have anything specific to add other than we don't claim to have answers, or completel understanding of the universe unlike other 'religion's...or something like that...

You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

A lotta ins and an a lotta outs in that Wiki article, M5 dude. A dude will have to keep his mind limber and maybe stay on a strict drug regiment in order to dig deep into what the dude who wrote it is trying to say.

I could start out by saying that dudeism is a "state of abiding," close akin to "a state of being." You know; the whole slacking approach to life. Taken er' easy and making doing nothing an art form of its own.

Nothing is fucked here. If, by lebowskist thing, you mean, basing a religion on a movie--that is, recognizing and using it as a guide to living well--I think this is an integral part of the beauty of Dudeism. It's a gentle joke on the power we give to the roots of traditional religions. What better way to take 'er easy than to divest the meaning of life from Ultimate, Immutable Truth?

You're 1000th post should be memorable...maybe a start of a thread...c'mon dude...words of wisdom... hey we used to greet Fighter jet pilots with a thousand hours under their wings with champagne and photographers. Then lots of messy beers in the squadron bar...(they were mostly relieved fellows...ie "fuck me a thousand hours flying around with my arse on fire...many, many near critical incidents....bits falling off ...dodgy navigators...even dodgier groundcrew and I'm still alive!!!

So come on Meekon...make the 1000th worth reading....tell us about the skulls...(did yah dig em up yourself?) or just some really good random shit...what has freaked you out most in that museum of yours..? c'mon dude...make it good ...make it a story worth reading!

Peace my man...and happy 1000th posting.

Surely, in the Dudeist ethos, this is even more reason to make your 100th post something in line with humble brevity, like:

"Whatever"

or

":)"

Let's not stand on ceramony here :)
