"Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble."- Joseph Campbell (That's just like your opinion, man. - The dude.)

Have you ever read Alan Watts' "the Way of Zen". IMDO- this is one of the best books in English about Buddhism, precisely because Watts understands how people are prone to myth the point. he digs deep into the history of how Buddhism evolved and morphed as it spread from India towards Japan, and tries to present the history, the culture trappings, and the meaning of Buddhism in such a way that readers don't mistake the menu for the meal. personally, i don't think i would have been ready to understand Dudeism if i had not spent the last five years reading and re-reading "The Way of Zen" and contemplating how one might try to create an original American Buddhism from scratch.
