It would seem that Dudeism is growing perhaps beyond "Lebowski-ism." But as in all beliefs, Dudeism has originated some of its elements, tenets, and culture from a myth; in this case a work of fiction based on the fantasy of The Big Lebowski (believed to be loosely based on a dude named Dowd, though I disagree with this notion).

Perhaps someday Dudeism will achieve it's place in books, class room lectures and scholarly works such as Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myths." ( http://www.jcf.org/new/index.php and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Campbell )

In using the term "myth" I do not mean an "untruth;" many truths are expressed in myths.

Bill Moyers' in "The Power of Myth" revisits Joseph Campbell......

"This six-part series of conversations with renowned scholar Joseph Campbell explored the enduring, universal themes expressed in mankind's oldest stories and examined their relevance for the modern world. Far from being lifeless, timeworn tales, Campbell told viewers, the ancient myths remain "clues to the spiritual potentialities of human life."

See - http://www.pbs.org/moyers/faithandreason/perspectives1.html

Perhaps modern Dudeism can be enriched by dudes of the ancient past?

"Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble."

I think the person who takes a job in order to live - that is to say, for the money - has turned himself into a slave.

I moved my what is abiding to the "What is Abiding" thread.

funny, i was just blathering about this the other day-- about how religions eventually move away from the exploration of the issues that brought original enlightenment, and become mired in the ritualistic expression of the events surrounding that moment... i think that's when metaphors start getting interpreted as facts. definitely my own opinion, man...  ;D

I've always thought Buddhism was one of the bigget criminals of this thing, they're really mythed the point, some of those guys!

Big Sid (as we like to call him) spends a long while contemplating on all he's seen and heard in his life, the mistakes he's made, the frailties of human life, etc etc, and comes out of it with enlightenment.  And yet, people seem to think that all these scriptures are the way forwards, as if he attained enlightenment and then was able to pass it off onto them like it's an in-date travelcard he no longer needed.

Surely the point is that his teachings only prepare people to find their own path to enlightenment, and there's nothing of much value in the scriptures that would actually give you what you need to get a quick-fix of it.

For me, Buddhism is about finding your own ways to truth, wisdom and enlightenment, to become a Buddha the same way that all other Buddhas have, by self-realisation, not learning what some other guy did.  I mean, if it was that simple, why don't we all sit under Bodhi trees for a month and bingo, instant enlightenment :P

Classic case of mything the point, the rituals don't matter one damned bit, they're only there to highlight the goal, not to lead you to it!  Well, that's what I always thought anyway... some Buddhists disagree.

I see Dudeism as much the same.  As I put it in the article I wrote for SpaceDog's online magazine, I think Dudeism is about one's attempt to become a Dude (which I now think is Sanskrit for limber-one, right? ;)) in the same way Buddhism is about becoming a Buddhas, not praising or following him.  We each have to find our own way to become Dudes, but it never hurts (well, sometimes, so it seems :P) to share ideas and help each other along with shared experiences, ethoses and philosophies.

With all the frickin post on moving dudeism forward...the good shit like this get pushed off the board.
Thankee

Well, if you don't like it, you don't have to get involved :P
If you don't like the book you're reading, stop reading it.  Don't rag on it and say there's better ones than this... pick up the better ones :)

I think a good solution would be to move the Moving Dudeism Forwards posts, and maybe a few others of the same vain that might be causing an obstruction to the other boards down to here.
Although we do want these sorts of discussions, we don't want them clogging up other boards and splitting the discussions too much.

Well here are some dudeism stuff and the youtube video is awesome. Peace.

~thinkingdude

Not going into talking about all of those, because picking at each one could take a long long loooong while... On the subject of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dudeism in particular, we did have a discussion a while back where it was agreed we needed to update that because it wasn't up to scratch.  The discussion started and tailed off here:  http://dudeism.com/smf/index.php?topic=2218.0

I'm not sure we really got it improved the way we wanted in the end.  Perhaps bears a re-examination in the future.

G Man

Dudeism is indeed growing.
The proof is that I was ordained May 28.
The responses I am receiving on my FB profile are interesting, a lot of folks are concerned for my sanity.
One old friend remarks, "Easy, big fella" and I respond, "Exactly bro, exaaaactly. ..."
And now Dudes, time to get serious about taking it easy

i totally agree- and the mything the point is compounded when ideas are imported from their place of origin to a new culture that does not really understand the culture of origin.

Have you ever read Alan Watts' "the Way of Zen".
IMDO- this is one of the best books in English about Buddhism, precisely because Watts understands how people are prone to myth the point. he digs deep into the history of how Buddhism evolved and morphed as it spread from India towards Japan, and tries to present the history, the culture trappings, and the meaning of Buddhism in such a way that readers don't mistake the menu for the meal.

personally, i don't think i would have been ready to understand Dudeism if i had not spent the last five years reading and re-reading "The Way of Zen" and contemplating how one might try to create an original American Buddhism from scratch.
May Peace, Love, and Grooviness be with you... Always!

A little late to the convo, but I'm just getting into Alan Watts. Don't have the book but I have the "Out of Your Mind" audio series, and have been thoroughly enjoying them.

Better late than never LazyDude.

Love Alan Watts myself. he was one of my major paths to Taoism (as well as Christmas Humphreys, who is more Yoga Zen Buddhism).
