"I pushed myself into a deep dark hole, and I followed it in." What the fuck, man! Is the Dude is experiencin' the personification of his own 'Johnson' (his dick, his rod)? All those potential strikes spread eagle, and that thar Dude holsterin' a drill. Ballin' down the lane! Fuck-Strike! (etymologically related) Is this a foretelling of what is to cum? The bloodline of "the man for his time and place[?]" A long line of abiders, Dude's & Dudettes? Each set to fit right in thar?  I'm just askin'.

Have ears to hear, Duderinos & Duderinas. New information has come to light. We're all in the Johannine bloodline. We're of light. We're stardust. Our Buddha nature. All we ever needed to have done, was to abide. We know it. Deep down in our hearts. That's why The Big Leb[heart]owski[place of] resonated so.

The Dude, "I got 4 bucks, almost 5." Donny, "I got $18." 1st Pismo of John 4:18: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

From Dudeist Hymnals across the world we sing:

But, oh what a wonderful feelin'
Just to know that you are near,
           It sets my heart a-reeling
From my toes up to my ears.
The Man In Me (Bob Dylan)

Thank you Jole & Ethan. Even if all mine is the product of a deranged mind, I've had fun.

The Dude states, "I got 4 bucks, almost 5." Donny states, "I got $18." 1st Epistle [pismo] of John 4:18: "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

You very conveniently interpret this as "John 4:18" not "Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me", or "2 Corinthians 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen", or "Philippians 4:18 I have received full payment and have more than enough"

Or even "5:18" "Matthew 5:18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth", or "1 Thessalonians 5:18 give thanks in all circumstances", or "Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to".

It's just a convenience.

String enough pearls of wisdom and you have a necklace, Dude. Visit the earlier post, Midrash of the Gospel of John, and you'll find pearls galore (NOT MINE).  And that's just one strand! What make's it really interestin' is the Nihilists. They're the key to the whole riddle. Take 'er easy, Dude.

Hey, Honorable Dude.

I'm a Brother Shamus, man! That's what I do. Shamusin' is great fun, maybe even more than that of those (writers/directors) who joyfully 'enscript' these allusions to other works of art, literature, religion, and/or philosophy. Believe me, I get that it's not for everybody. Most people's eyes glaze over at the mention. "Get a life!" the insinuated refrain. Maybe there should be an out-of-the-way posting area.

However, because The Big Lebowski is so loaded with religious allusion, I thought this posting area of Dudism.com (Dudeist Religion, Under the Influence) would be the most appropriate. And I am surely under the influence.

The Big Lebowski may be likened to a cinematic mosaic. From the theater goer's vantage one appreciates its verve ("Oh, what a wonderful feeling"). We Brother's Shamus, however, cannot help inspecting closely the tesserae (the tiles) that make up the mosaic. If lucky, one is rewarded by a strangely irresistible familiarity. Granted, it could be a false positive, in the parlance of our day. But that diminishes when one finds another, and yet another familiarity within the same family of familiarities. Strike! Now your on to something!

There is another reason why we do this, Dude. If one sits gently with a film like The Big Lebowski, as you must sit with a Zen Koan, it just may open. As a lotus blossoms, you are rewarded with a deeper experience. And that is where I must not tread for that would be sacrilege.

Here I have to disagree entirely. Look at any interview with the Coen Brothers on the subject and they make it very plain it is not "loaded with religious allusion" nothing could be further from the truth.

The movie stands on its own. Regardless of the creators' intent or interpretation, the move "is" whatever it is. Of course, part of what the movie "is" depends on how the audience interprets it. It's like asking whether Jane Smiley meant "One Thousand Acres" to be a modern telling of King Lear. Well, that's the way a lot of people read it. What she intended or whether she agrees is a different point entirely.

I agree, Dude. I'm a devotee of the Coenesque Genre. But The Big Lebowski is now mine, just as it is yours. That's not to say my ramblings-on are out of whole cloth. The probabilities of finding extended families of cohering allusions and references would seem astronomical.

And yes, as Ethan Coen is quoted (in below Dudespaper 2005 article), It is this "weird impulse when people feel the need to read things as code." Me thinks, the Koans doth protest too much!

Check out this Dudette's Paper below. Excellent perspective on "references, allusions, the use of use of music dialogs, and imagery." And she more than touches on the Coan Brothers standard demureness. Sure hope she made it to the finals, man.

Sorry particularly and specifically Dudette's is not the accepted nomenclature, we are all Dudes, what ever the gender. Dude is like Actor, or Doctor as a title. We do not define a division in Dudeism by sex (apart from those that are having it and those that are doing it manually).

Also thanks for the link to the very interesting article.

Quote from: Anne Lehwald

For Ethan Coen it is “a weird impulse when people feel the need to read things as a code.” His older brother Joel even claims that “we never, ever go into our films with anything like that in mind”. Fortunately, though, he admits: “We are definitely guilty of teasing”

Which goes back to my assertion that they don't place biblical references and so on into the film.

Next we will be getting Dudeist Kabalists telling us if you translate the script into Yiddish and apply the correct formula it describes the exact time of the end of days.

;D

That's cool. That's cool, Dude. Must admit I've never been accused of the brevity thing.

All I'm sayin' . . . all I'm sayin' man . . . "It might not be just a simple . . . you know." (Now that thar's a fine example of a Koan tease.) Them Brothers are holdin' out on us, and a good thing they are. Who wants to be spoon fed. Got enough of that in the pew. "All the Dude ever wanted was his rug back." 8)
