I was a baseball player. College and semi pro.
Golf was always a punch line.
Like when you don't make the playoffs "there is always golf".
Sort of salt in the wounds.

Damn, man. Sympathies on the back problem. I have a nerve issue in my upper back and know a little of how fast back problems can lock you down...

Thanks, I appreciate it.  I have good days..well, better days...and not so good days, and at this point I've just sort of gotten used to taking it as it comes and dealing with it.

...The other dudeist part of golf, just thought about it, is the harder you try the worse you generally do. Try to hit it 300 yards and you'll topspin the fucker about 15 feet in front of you.  Focus on breathing, rhythm, and pace...then, boom, the little white ball goes out there 260. I prefer walking when circumstances permit, too. Shoot better, enjoy it more, and really the round is just about as fast.

A friend once commented, "For a game I enjoy so much, I can't figure out why I go home so pissed off."  And in my experience, that's true--you hit a couple of bad shots, get irritated, try harder, and you end up getting in your own way.  I prefer walking myself; it sounds contrary, but I find it more relaxing than having to constantly climb in and out of one of those carts.

Hey, Al... You ever try Nintendo Wii golf or bowling?

The reason I ask is - I've had back issues since the mid 90's; like you I don't have "good" days as much as "better" ones... And it's actually something I can do on those days. You don't have to do the full motions (involving your whole body) and can keep everything in your arms.

(I know, I know... playing a video game isn't like really bowling or golfing, or anything... But I'll tell you what dudes... It's a blast and in this case something is better than nothing, least for me). I can bowl 10 lanes in the comfort of my domicile and enjoy home made beverages that are more modestly priced options than "the club house"  8)

And 13, looks like you had a blast, man. What a beautiful looking day!

Hey, Al... You ever try Nintendo Wii golf or bowling?

Not Wii, no.  We have a Playstation 2...well, we had a Playstation 2.  I mean, we still have it, but it died three or four years ago and I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet.  When I do I'll probably get another Playstation (whichever version is available at the time) simply because I already have a bunch of Playstation games and I don't really want to have to start all over again and replace them with Nintendo games.  One of 'em is a golfing game that I enjoy--it's not quite the same as the real thing, but I have fun with it (or, at least I did before the PS2 died) and it does kinda' satisfy those golfing urges.

For whatever reason I never checked to see if they have a bowling game for the Playstation console(s); I'd guess they do, but until I get a new console there's no reason to look into it.  I'm not a good bowler in real life, but I can't remember ever going bowling and not having fun regardless of how poorly I performed, so that is something I'll have to look into (for the Playstation, that is).  As the comedian Gallagher once said, "Bowling's an excuse to get drunk.  And drunk is an excuse for your bowling."  I think the Dude would agree.  Then again, bowling is one of the few things he seems to take seriously, so maybe not.  ;D

Golf? No man. Did the mini-golf thing when I was a kid. Good times there. Bowling's cool. No worries about any dress code at the alley. Golf, the dress code enforcement isn't cool at all.

How is Far Cry 4? I've been addicted to Destiny most of these months. I hate and love it all at once, it's weird.

I'm finding it really good fun.

I bought one of the early versions (FC1) for the map editor, but this one (FC4) has lots of little subtleties.

For instance all the weapon and equipment (loot) is upgradeable, not new in itself, but the way you do it is to kill and skin animals. Weapons slots are governed by your "holster". To get two slots you have to collect two skins, three slots three skins, four slots four skins, but the twist is the animal you have to get changes for each level. If you kill them with a bow and arrow you get more skins, imagine trying to kill a bear or a tiger with a bow without being killed. Multiply this across about eight different areas loot, weapons, etc.

And that's just the equipment. I'm trying to work out how to kill a rhino with a bow and arrow at the moment.

That's without the normal bits taking radio towers and outposts, killing revenge convoys.

Then there's a couple of guys living in your house (your characters dads old house). The first time you meet them they drug you and you end up in a gladiator style battle, second time they drug you and you end up in Shangri-la, third time and they drug you and they enhance your perception so you can look through walls.

That's not even half of it.

As you can see I'm not really enjoying it at all.

;D

I did for about 3 years. I was not very good considering my Bro is a 8 handicap. I stopped for the following reasons. A: To expensive B: Almost died of heat stroke on a 97 degree day. Other than that it was fun.

In my experience that's only at the uptight, elitist, private courses where you have to be a member just to pull into the parking lot.  I've only ever played at the public "pay as you play" courses, and unless you're wearing something that's truly offensive (think "Wal-Martians") they don't really bother you about it.  That being said, if I was forced to wear "golf" clothes (not counting the shoes; they do help) I wouldn't play either.

Dress codes for golfing are outdated, elitist, counterproductive bullshit. I love golf. If I play a lot that year, I can shoot in the 80s. If I can't get out much, it's more like a buck-oh-five. But I consistently shoot better when comfortable. That doesn't include slacks and a tucked-in polo shirt. Sorry. I'm a khaki shorts and Tommy Bahama (style, not necessarily brand, but they're solid, too) guy. Last time I checked, LeBron didn't play in a three-piece suit.

Example. I played in a charity outing last year. Attended the dinner/auction afterwards and bid on a package for 18 holes at a nice local course I had played earlier that summer (wearing shorts and Tommy Bahama). Ended up winning the auction. Took my brother with me. The 20 year old schmuck at check-in hassled me because my shirt wasn't tucked in and my brother because his shorts had cargo pockets. Fucking fascists. I gave a courtesy tuck that lasted twenty minutes and said, "You want him to take 'em off?"

My brother is a two-handicap (I think, it could be one shot either way now) and tore up the course...even with pockets. I just loaded up on beer, hit bombs, and skulled pitches. Typical day. It was progress for me not to blow-up at the dude or hassle the members about the attitude. But I'm not going back. There are better courses to garner my charity dollars.
