Any of you dudes play golf?
« on: July 22, 2013, 08:49:02 PM »
It's my bowling. I have just one friend I'll play with, he has the playing mindset I do. We don't keep score, have a few beers and just have fun. I have played with a few that were die hard golfers, had to keep score and you had to follow the rules to a T. Man, did they take all the fun out of it.

I tried once years ago (mostly as a hobby to do with my dad).  I didn't have any game, though, and my mindset was very uptight.  I wonder how I'd do now...

Now, disc golf, that's another story. I do enjoy me a round of frolf with a few cold ones and some friends.
The clouds above us come together and disperse;
The breeze in the courtyard departs and returns.
Life is like that, so why not relax?
Who can keep us from celebrating?

I tried twice with my stepdad but it just wasn't my thing, I do love me some mini-golf though lol.

I worked out at the local country club when I was younger and learned one valuable lesson... a golf course is the only place in America where it's legal to drink and drive hahaha.

I did enjoy that job though, just riding along on my zero-turn mower jammin out with my headphones 8) good times.
We had one of those John Deere Gators too, man they were fun, we'd always sneak into the woods at lunch to blaze up before heading back out to finish mowing :)

I wonder if they'll be needing any summer help next year lol

Golf, a great way to wander around on a lawn some one else mowed, drink beer with friends and enjoy the out doors. The only reason to keep score is to figure out who is buying the first round at the 19th hole.

I've thought about trying golf like that -- screw the score, etc. Watching golf on tv is about as much fun as watching flies fuck. I'm guessing that playing it is better, though. For some reason, people in this state take golf seriously so it's hard to find someone who wants to play like that.

Ive been golfing most of my life as golf is in my family as they say. I've even been a club champion and I always remember the last round just going out and enjoying myself. I didn't even know my score until the other player gave me my card and didn't know I'd won until the people in the club house were congratulating me.
I love golf but can see the ridiculousness about it also. Robin Williams gives a good description if you look him up on YouTube (sorry I'm to lazy to find the link)

Played the game with my stepdad a few times as a little acheiver, but don't really partake these days. Still love mini golf though, as long as the course isn't loaded with morons cuz that just stresses me out man.

Obviously I'm not a golfer; but I will admit to shootin' a few golf balls now and then on the driving range with some dudes over a few beers and later a few burgers.

I'm a better golfer than a bolwer , but thats not saying much . I don't get to uptight about the rules . If some one ahead of me  leaves a club laying by the green I'll do the karma thing and get it back to them .

I love golf but don't get to play as much (or as well) as I'd like. It's a very Zen/Tao-esque experience in my amateur opinion. You're outside, in nature, absorbed in a shell of relative silence and calm. You have to focus on the moment: hit the ball, find it, hit it again. You aren't actively engaged against an opponent but, rather, yourself or the course. Thou shalt not be a paraquat or the course marshal will escort thee from the premises.

The only fascist element is the dress-code at some nicer courses. I'm not wearing swim trunks and a wife-beater so loosen up, Franklin. All of that pretense is just a bit too Bushwood for my tastes.

Mark it eight, Dude.  My dad was such a good golfer that he probably could have gone pro if life had led him in that direction; he started teaching me how to play as soon as I was old enough to hold a club.  Hitting a little ball with a crooked stick just so you can go find it and hit it again might sound like a fool's errand, but I also found it to be very Zen-like for the reason you stated--your focus in that moment, mind and body working together.  And yet, I'm also reminded of the Bruce Lee quote, "It is not, 'I am doing this,' but rather, an inner realization that 'this is happening through me,' or 'it is doing this for me.'  The consciousness of self is the greatest hindrance to the proper execution of all physical action.?  You're giving yourself over to the moment while being completely in the moment.  Bowling is similar, but being indoors doesn't allow you to tap into the energy of the nature around you as easily.  And, as you wrote, even though I played with friends, I only ever played against myself.

Unfortunately, I had to have surgery in 2004 to repair a herniated disc in my lower back and wound up with Post-Laminectomy Syndrome (a.k.a. Failed Back Syndrome), which is a fancy-schmancy way of saying I'm still in chronic pain even though they repaired the defect; it's so common they had to come up with a name for it.  So, for all intents and purposes, my golfing days (and my bowling days, for that matter) are over.  It's a bummer, man, but on the bright side my reduced mobility allows me to lead a more Dudely lifestyle.  Ups and downs, strikes and gutters.  Life goes on, man.

Damn, man. Sympathies on the back problem. I have a nerve issue in my upper back and know a little of how fast back problems can lock you down.

The other dudeist part of golf, just thought about it, is the harder you try the worse you generally do. Try to hit it 300 yards and you'll topspin the fucker about 15 feet in front of you.  Focus on breathing, rhythm, and pace...then, boom, the little white ball goes out there 260. I prefer walking when circumstances permit, too. Shoot better, enjoy it more, and really the round is just about as fast.
