The Dude represents many major religious figures. I offer one such example:

In the first scene in the bowling alley with Walter and Donny, the Dude is resonating Christ on the cross. He stands above and in front of them, arms outstretched like the crucified Jesus. The hole in his shirt is the wound in Jesus' side where he was stabbed by a Roman soldier. He arches his head back just as Walter exhorts him to take up his grievance with TBL, his father figure. This is Jesus crying out "Father, why hast thou forsaken me?"

This is the last temptation of Christ. Walter, with his old testament blood lust and serpentine yellow eyes is Satan, tempting Jesus off the cross. Dig it.

So, if The Dude is Jesus, then who, tell me, is The Jesus supposed to be?
Is there a Ralph's around here?

The Jesus' theme song is an Eagles tune by the Gypsy Kings. His purple jumpsuit resonates the purple robes of the Roman emperors. He is the corruption of the Roman church.

Gypsy Kings also has another connotation, to another religious theme in TBL. The word gypsy actually refers to Egyptians, just as the word "gypped" refers to gypsies. The Dude is also Osiris, king of the underworld. Osiris was assassinated and resurrected. He was the first mummy, and also the main source for the Christ mythology, which was drawn from many ancient sources.

He is also Mercury, Apollo, Hermes, Buddha. There is evidence in the film to support them all.

The Dude abides is an anagram for Thee Budda dies.

Edited for accuracy.

Not to split hairs here, but the song was done by the Gypsy Kings. Spanish is a Latin language, though.

Dios Mio, man.
I'll tell you what I'm blathering about...

Thank you for the correction, forumdude, a lotta strands in the old duder's head, some rather greasy and tangled. I abide with a little help from my friends.

The Da Fino Code. That's worthy of it's own thread, man.

Forumdude, may I suggest, that because Lebowskian theory and Symbolism cover much the same ground, that you combine the two sub-categories into one and call it "The Da Fino Code".
