Good morning dudes,

I'm not a regular user of the forum and so far I've posted very few (and uninsteresting) things. But right now I'm reading a book and I think it's really amazing, and I want to share it with you because I've found inside some wisdom about taking it easy, and I need it these days.

The book is from Henri Laborit, a french neurobiologist (I'm french, sorry for if the english is bad), and is named "l'?loge de la fuite", it is not available in english but it means something like "eulogy of running away". The guy made a lot of research about stress.

His point in the very first chapter is quite simple : as social mammals, we are biologically wired to not taking it easy, because in a social group, the less stressful situation is stable domination, and we naturally want to be in this posture, the alpha. But the people who are submitted or the people who see their domination challenged are stressed, and it is almost everybody.

He continues by saying that's the human mind is amazing because it developed imagination, and imagination leads to leisure, creativity and is a way to escape a stressful reality. For him, taking it easy, just accept the stress of your situation, relax and not wanting to fight for your social position, is something human are capable to do when they are cultured and civilised.

I find it very interesting, because usually people say the opposite, that the guy who don't seek domination is closer to nature than the guy who work like a dog. I've myself always thought that Walter is deep within a civilised man, while the Dude is something more savage. But Henri Laborit says it's the opposite. Society uses a weakness of the human mind to incite people to work and seek glory, but people actually follows their natural instinct. And someone who has some culture and a well structured brain can reject his basic instinct of domination, accept the stress of his position and seek relaxation.

Voil? ! This book is changing my way of seeing the world, because now I not only know that I should take it easy, I also know why.

I have come to see that the most genuinely hateful and evil people always ply their evil ways in the name of "love".
When they crow about their loving spirit they are actually insisting that others must love them and anyone else who they lay claim to or they hate them completely and absolutely.
What I am actually getting at is that Friedrich Nietzsche was correct IMO that all actions are in the end a will to power.
Those who pursue those ends the most ruthlessly always do so in the name of love of some higher end.
Basically "the guy who doesn't seek domination" inevitably seeks domination by being the kind of guy who doesn't seek domination.
And most importantly defining those who do as evil and not worthy of any rights.
And so every loser and deadbeat whines on and on about universal basic income and socialism.
We see it over and over.
We are animals.
Try as we might we will never escape our basic self.
Everybody wants to be the big dog and everybody wants to make it to the finals. Even pederasses.
Some can really roll dude. Some can't.
But this ain't nam. There are rules.
Fuck it.

I agree with parts of this. I think people in general forget we're mammals, specifically great apes. So we're still animals. We're smart animals but still animals. There was a book (I'll get the title) that basically said that long ago humans were smack dab in the middle of the food chain. Our ancestors could hunt and kill rabbits, rats, etc, but the big ones like tigers, elephants, and so on were still our predators. The only reason we rose to the top is because our brain started using a lot more energy so we outsmarted those critters. Now, here's the problem, he said: As smart as we are, our brains are still prey animals. We changed too fast, so we're smart but we're stuck with frightened animal brains. That's why we have phobias, anxiety, nightmares, and so on.

So, yeah, we're still stuck in this instinctual need to find the best leader. Not always the strongest, but maybe the most adaptable. We still listen to our elders and most of them aren't physically strong. Humans don't like to be calm and reserved. Why? Think of it like still waters. It gets full of algae & mosquitoes, and gets stagnant & stale. Now, flowing water... Dudes... Moving water gets oxygenated, slowly moves mountains, makes canyons, and gives life.

I think our minds are like that. If it's too stale, too stagnant, too boring, it gets full of algae. Figuratively.

Even if we realize we need that calm mind, our minds still have to work. It still does something. Because sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.

If some of this makes no sense, I'm just typing it off the top of my head. Didn't really think about it. Sorry.

If the world of human was perfect we could be calm.
But it's not. And in that context being calm and removed is to not take sides.
Which is cool and all. It ties the room together.
But when all around us is turmoil we are not an island.
We can try but inevitably we must take a side.
Or eventually we will lose our Dick  or Rod or Johnson.
We aspire to be Dude but this is Nam.
It's a very large question really.
