Hello, I'm a new Dudeist. I just want to ask if hardworking is undude or not in Dudeism. I mean, you have to be very, very hardworking to create a whole new religion from scratch, am i right?

I see nothing wrong with working hard. It makes taking it easy that much better.

I second the whole nothing wrong with working hard statement. In my opinion, I've always thought of the taking it easy lifestyle as not so much advocating laziness but instead not letting the world around you stress you out. Work hard and as long as you maintain a good attitude about it, it's still very Dude. On the other hand if working hard isn't your thing, say fuck it man and go bowling either way the Dude Abides.

I say that if you work hard you earn the right to take it easy.

I agree.  There's nothing wrong with working hard, especially if you dig what you're doing, enjoy it on some level, or at least don't hate it.  Besides, if everyone was as lazy as the Dude nothing would get done and the world would grind to a dead stop.  Work as hard as you like, but balance it out by taking it easy just as hard.

Work precisely as long and as hard as necessary to achieve your goals, whatever they are.

For me the whole "takin' 'er easy" thing is predicated upon the amount of stress that I bring upon myself during the course of my day to day life. At present I am a member of the nursing profession and if I don't do the job to the best of my abilities I have pangs of conscience thereafter, however, if I do the job to the best of my abilities I feel better about myself thereafter and during my time off I am better equipped to relax and, as we say, "take 'er easy". So working hard at my job grants me the psychological peace necessary to relax when I am off duty.
So working hard, in my opinion, is definitely not undude.

Agree completely. Also, with the right, abiding perspective, it's fully possible to take even hard work easily. What I mean is: effort and taking it easy aren't incompatible if you've kept your mind limber enough

Remember, The Dude himself was a hard worker when it came to bowling.  To work hard is not un-dude.

Except for the fact that we never actually see the Dude bowl in the movie, yeah.  ;D

Yeah, very good point. Also why I tend to work a bit on Saturday mid-mornings. Otherwise, I just keep thinking about the shit I need to do and can't enjoy the weekend.

Not only that, The Dude was able to work hard trying to crack the case. He always did whatever the situation required he just did so in a relaxed manner. I've always thought that if The Dude was truly a lazy man wouldn't he just have drank Black Russians instead of going to the store when he ran out of Half/Half? A truly lazy person avoids work, The Dude at least worked hard enough to accomplish the things he needed to.

BikerDude

It's can be very exhausting.

Out here we are all his children
