I think the attraction to the show was generational as well as cultural.  When Saved by the Bell premiered in 1989 I was 28 years old and had been married for eight years, so it's premise held zero interest for me.  From what little I've seen of the show, it didn't represent my mid- to late-70s high school experience at all.
I don't go to church on Sunday
Don't get on my knees to pray
Don't memorize the books of the Bible
I got my own special way

Yes, it's entirely a nostalgia thing. In and of itself, it's trash.

Never watched it.
About the only guilty pleasure show that makes me nostalgic is Northern Exposure.

Wow! I just realized that the fan support for Northern Exposure is very similar to the Big L.
Both had yearly fan gatherings that lasted for years after the show / movie end date.
