Man, they busted Chong for being Chong. Simple as that. Which to my mind is several orders of magnitude worse than their stated reason.

I could make some interesting shit with that lego, though.

Exactly right.  They wanted a celebrity name included in their bullshit bust in order to get more press.  The thing they didn't count on was how vocal he would be about the whole thing after the fact; surely they got more than they bargained for.

I get the feeling they were also expecting more public support than they got. The way the media likes to jump on "disgraced"celebrities might have played in their favour. But most, if not all of the coverage I saw at the time seemed either neutral or somewhat in Chong's favour.

That's a good point--they underestimated his popularity.  If he'd been one of those celebrities who was always making headlines for being a troublemaker of some sort or if he'd had an arrest record a mile long, things might have worked out differently.  But even people who don't like the Cheech and Chong movies and/or the way their characters "glamorized" drug use (in the parlance of our times) don't dislike him, and it seems the media chose to side with him in most articles, or at least remained neutral.  And once he was free and clear and was able to speak openly about the whole thing, especially when he revealed that he plead guilty and took the heat only because the Feds threatened to prosecute his wife and son if he didn't, most of the media made him out to be the victim (which he was).

For anyone who doesn't already know about it, there's a pretty decent documentary about Chong's entrapment and incarceration called a/k/a/ Tommy Chong (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWZTvZQC-2A).  Granted, it tells the story from Tommy's perspective, and some new shit has come to light since it's release, but it's worth a look if you're interested.
