Clearly he is a dude and always has been. If you ever saw the movie "Barfly" with Mickey Rourke he plays the part of Charles Bukowski. In the movie his name is Henry Chinaski (not sure of the last name spelling) but Chinaski is the main character in several of Bukowski's novels. Bukowski falls in with Kerouac and others like him (IMHO) in that he writes about honest life on the street without any bullshit heroics clouding the picture.
And his works are really autobiographical in that he actually lived the life that he wrote about.

Definitely a dude. If you haven't read Ham on Rye yet, I highly recommend it.

He's a cool dude indeed.
