It should be pointed out that most of the renaissance artists subsisted through the patronage system.

The only way for an artist to exist was through patronage.

Prior to the Renaissance the only patron really was the church.

The majority of Da Vinci's work was siege engines and weapons of mass destruction. But that was what he was paid for.
