It occurred to me the other day that its possible Maude set the whole thing up. Its all a goddamn fake man.
Like Lenin said, look for the person who will benefit.  And you will, uh, you know, you'll, uh, you know what I'm trying to say--
She needed a man with the same last name to father her child, but she had to make sure that he was of worthy quality to pass on traits to the child.
So she devises this entire like "quest" for the prospective Lebowski to go on. There may have been several other Lebowski's in the phone book who didn't make it.
I mean she has the wealth, uh, and the resources obviously.
Maude knew the nihilists, and probably knew Jackie Treehorn. She might have introduced them for all I know.
The Big Lebowski probably didn't know shit...but Brandt was in on the deal.
Then Maude convinces friends to get Bunny to leave for the weekend, and as soon as she's gone has the nihilists deliver the message. From there the plot unfolds almost exactly as Maude has planned. It went okay, dudes car got a little banged up. And just to make sure everything goes to plan, she never lets The Dude out of her sight because she has hired Da Fino and The Stranger to watch The Dude 24 hours a day.
That's why The Stranger doesn't drink at the bowling alley. He's a brother shamus, a dick, man. He doesn't want to drink on the job.
The whole story about Bunny being "Fawn Knutdsen" or whatever is a goddamn fake, made up by Maude, the kidnapping is a fake, the nihilists are dupes who don't know shit, otherwise the girlfriend would have never gave up her toe,  there never was any money. its all a goddamn fake man.
Note that only after creatively dealing with all of the adverse circumstances and also after getting a clean bill of health from the doctor (he's a good man, and thorough) ...only then does The Dude get to the coitus.
She probably didn't like seeing Donny go, but I guess that's the way the whole durned human comedy keeps perpetuatin' it-self, down through the generations, westward the wagons, across the sands a time until-- aw, look at me, I'm ramblin' again.

A fine theory, dude. I add that Knox Harrington was (in the parlance of our times) banging Maude and in on the plot. It's all a goddamn fake man. It's like Lenin said, you look for the person who will benefit.  And uh,uh, you know, uh, you know you'll, uh, uh, you know what I'm trying to say--
