I know this might not be a popular theory on here since it seems like a lot of fellers round these parts take a libertarian interpretation of dudeism. I myself dabbled in libertarianism, not in 'nam of course... Say what you want about the tenets of liberal socialism, at least its an ethos. Anyhow, isn't it possible that the dude, having no job sir, is on the dole? I mean, 1991 when this here story unfolded was before that facist Bill Clinton gutted the welfare laws. He could be buying his oat sodas with unemployment or welfare. Gotta feed the monkey.

Caesar dude

I didn't see him signing on...

And I think if he did there would be huge scope for some undudely reactionaries in the dole office to try and upset his day...

Oh and if he was on benefits he would get his rent paid for sure....and then there would be the weekly visits to the job centre to ensure he was hunting for a job...etc!

All in My Dudely opinion of course!

Peace dude.
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

Well, the innerestin aspect here dudes is; He wrote a post dated cheque for his 1/2+1/2 so he was evidently skint. He told the cops he was unemployed. And I don't know the American system but maybe he was responsible for paying his own rent! Was dole money payed directly to his bank account or was he given a cheque/cash? Unfamiliar with the process even on this side of the damp patch, never having been between jobs.
If you believe you can tell me what to think.
I believe I can tell you where to go.

I know a lot of people just like assume he wrote a post dated check, but there is nothing in the movie that indicates he wrote the $0.69 check in the same month as when Marty asks The Dude for the rent.
There are quite a few scenes that could have taken place on different days or even different months.
Are we to assume that Donny died on one day and then was cremated and his ashes spread on the next day just because that is how we see the events in the movie?
Donny could have died in one week, been cremated the next and his ashes dispersed the next week, the next month, or even the next year for all we know.

Absolutely. Like many movies, TBL is cut together with the assumption that the viewer will interject a reasonable timeline, without any hints from the script itself. I think the continuity is self explanatory...

I don't know how the dude does it, but I try to make my own beer and mead to lesson the cost

BigDudeA - welcome to our little beach community! Grab a rug and an oat soda - bar's over there.

Reverend Rudolph

Judging by the knowing looks he exchanged with his landlord, I presumed that he paid his rent with a few grams of Mary J every couple of weeks.

Yeah, Marty did look a little bit like "wink wink, nod nod," when he hit the dude up for the "rent money." Some ganja would be a cool way to pay the rent and keep the monkey off your back.
