I use to ride an aprilia rs but my wife won't let me have a motorbike any more :(
I use to watch the biker build off series and some of the choppers were cool so if I am ever allowed one again think I would go for a custom soft tail, with a David Mann'esk stretched front end

Sorry but unless it's for financial reasons, I just don't agree with the "wife won't let me" bit.  If she loves you, then she'll understand and let you do what you want to do(within reason of course) to make yourself happy. She doesn't have to like it, just long as you're a safe rider etc. it shouldn't be a problem. Live your life man!

My pub to pub reference about choppers was because here in the States we call them "bar hoppers". Most people here only ride those things short distances- yet somehow they still think they're hardcore bikers... it's comical.

My opinion is a chopper's definitely not for "street fighting" in the city because they don't handle worth a damn, and most don't have any acoutrements for touring so most you'll be doing is cruising short distances on back roads. And that's cool, that's cool, if that's what you're into. My VFR has become my "get away from everything" bike as I got hard cases that attach easily for touring and it's got a 5 gallon tank for great fuel range, plus it's powerful and smooth. I put over 1200 miles on it in four days touring all around the great lakes and upper peninsula back in June, talk about some great abiding... it was great to get away from it all! Don't matter what you end up riding though, just as long as you ride... and of course abide!

Where are you from anyway Bulletooth? I get the feeling somewhere in Europe? If so you guys got some great bikes there!

Ukraine. We do have biker clubs, but you don't see those very often. Pretty much only half of the spring and summer are good for riding

I don't think the cut-throat legal profession has written a divorce clause YET regarding a man being unfaithful to his wife with a fuckin' motorcycle. And if she wants to make it one of those "irreconcilable differences" things you're better off single.

Ah far out. I'm in Michigan(US) so I have to deal with winter here as well, though I'm sure it's milder than yours! I ride all year long though as long as there's no ice on the road, but I'd prefer to live somewhere south where it's milder all year because winter blows man.

In hindsight maybe I shouldn't have regaled her with stories of near death experiences.
I would also point out that I use to live in Scotland and there's only so many days a year you can go out and not get pissed on ... Okay I admit it, I chose to stop. Happy now? ;)

This may be a tad off topic, but I say you should abide more with winter. It's a pretty awesome season if you really put your mind into it, people seem to hate it just because it doesn't have what summer has. But neither does summer have what winter does

Still off topic but I would say if you can visit Scotland do it before they vote for independence and screw the country up.

Really is my major zen moment when I'm at the range though.  Controlled actions, breathing, concentration.  Forget about everything and focus on trying to make the smallest, most consistent hole on the paper 100+ yards away.

i would love a bike dudes but don't trust the other people on the road.

Only lived in the US for just under a year and cant get into the whole shooting range thing, I served in war cant really see it as a stress relief.

I used to abide in winter in my younger days, and while I'm still fairly young at 35, I can't do the fun shit I used to partake in years ago like snowboarding... my knees hurt just thinking about it. All it equates to to me now is very limited motorcycling, no patio time, no shorts, and very cold outdoor cooking(grilling and smoking which I'm into big time). Not a fan of winter. Sure there are those "nice winter days" with picturesque snowy scenery, but more often it's just repeated grey cold days in which old man winter jams his icicle dildo in everyone's ass. Not trying to be a bummer here, it's just like my opinion man.

Ride like everyone is out to kill you, because they are.  I usually go out off peak hours, later in the evening (Deer are an issue though) or early morning, this way the cagers aren't so bad.  I get caught in rush hour I'll find a place to hang out for awhile not to deal with it.  Get a lot of strange looks and some police visits after pulling my bike over to the side of the road, grabbing a soda out of the saddle bag and setting up my folding camp chair.  Small collapsable fishing pole in there too, spend some time fishing in a nearby lake or creek.

As far as the range, can see where you come from with it.  I'm a collector of the WWII era and earlier always been a history nut though.  Black powder, stuff made in the 1800's to WWI and WWII issue, 1946 and newer is my cutoff.  Out there with something made in the 30's, firing ammo made in the same era, dug out of a farmers field in Bulgaria or what have you.  I turn it into a mental competition for myself more then anything.

Guy further down, shooting a modern Remchester or whatever it is, adjustable stock, custom bullets, wind direction indicators, all rounds chronograph-ed to be within 100FPS of each other.  My all wood stock, surplus ammo that might not even fire on the trigger pull and still putting up groups on par or if not better.  The thought of proving that this nearly 100 year old war horse can do just as good as something rolling off the factory yesterday as long as I do my part...  Just kind of blocks the majority of everything else out of my mind. 

It's not for everyone, I'm the first one to admit that, but for me it's beneficial. 

Dig your style dude, once i get my new drivers licence I may have to take another look into that whole bike thing 

It's definitely a freeing experience.  No windows, no doors, open wind and the control of the machine.  Hard to describe really.  Depending on your intentions I would suggest looking up the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.  They offer courses and classes from basics all the way up to advanced.  I'd been riding around here and there but opted to take a class for the insurance deduction and was shocked at how much stuff they taught and how thorough it was.  Good tips on how to deal with cars, obstacles in the road, dogs and animals, emergency stops, etc, etc.

Or just find your local group of guys who'll let you ride along, either way you're gonna learn quite a bit. 

I was a member of the rifle club when I was at uni and there is a zen like method to target shooting that I dig, the mental and physical balance required to hit a target an inch in diameter from 50 yards with a non telescopic sight. Contrary to what you might think it is a really calming experience
