You gotta look at it this way.  I don't know if it's changed since I took the TSA screening tests in 2005/2006 but really, all the TSA is, is a government version of a Private Security company you'd see in an office building or, hell even a mall.  You have to have a diploma or GED, if your state has a regulation on licensed security officer you need that usually, and that's about it.  Take the test, pass the test, report to work where they'll train you further.

I've been in the security industry for a long time now.  I've seen the low end of the spectrum (The stereotypical guy in a chair, reading the newspaper as the thieves cart everything out of the building) right up to the tried and true professionals who actually give a crap about their job and are there to do it.

It just seems that once the government get's their mitt's into it it tends to attract more of the lower spectrum for some reason.

Wow man, I'm traveling to California tomorrow night and I will definitely be checking all my stuff closely now. Good thing I only bring my carry on (checked bag fees are just too expensive for me lol).

Fed Ex.  Seriously.  I know people in the travel department that are on the road 10-20 days per month and they actually save money on certain trips by over nighting their luggage to the hotel they're headed for.  Plus they have a tracking number to keep tabs on it as opposed to the airlines which can lose it and no clue where.

That's just like an awesome idea, mang. Next vacation I'll look into that. FedEx abides.

Customs Carnet. They work for you as well as for The Man.

I used to have to use them all the time for music travel - as soon as someone wants to open a case or look at your stuff, you pull the carnet and your notebook and ask them what their name is, write it down, who do you work for, what is your department, why are you looking at my stuff, all smiles and friendly tone of voice - but they back the fuck off when you are taking notes and names.

Any public servant is obliged to give you their identity, provided you ask nicely. I always ask nicely, and they (almost) never fuck with me. Any more...
