Armed Task Force To Patrol Streets fucking with citizens just for being outdoors. Said task force would be in riot gear and carrying AR-15's at all times, stopping everyone they see to perform ID checks and compel the citizen to give a valid reason for being out and about.

I'm just gone, man, totally fucking gone.

I have always wondered why it's pronounced 'ar-can-saw'.

Anybody know?

Similar question: where did the southern drawl come from? I think the 2 are related...

Leopoldrose

The difference between "KAN-sas" and "AR-kan-saw" is about 18 Natty Lights.

As an Acadian (not Cajun, but Cajuns were originally Acadian, and we all derive from Nova Scotia, so we're all cousins), I can say it's more than likely not a Cajun thing. It's a French-Canadian thing, but probably not specifically from us Acadians.

Arkansas is the French version of the Sioux word acansa, "downstream place." As for why my fellow Frenchies put an S on the end, I don't know. We're frogs; we don't have to make sense!

Kansas, however, is also a Sioux word, and there were Kansa (Kaw) tribe there. Basically, "wind people." Why is the S pronounced here? Again, probably just insanity. Maybe they used an incorrect plural? "There's them Kansas again. Let's name the river after 'em." (First the river, then the state name, by the way.)

* Carpe diem all over the damn place *
