Seeing the earth as spherical is an artifact of the limitations of human consciousness which cannot directly perceive the non three dimensional nature of reality. It is convenient to think of the earth as a sphere but this does not represent ultimate reality which is more closely modelled by a two dimensional earth. It is entirely reasonable to describe the earth as 'flat' but its extent is infinite.

Yeah,Pratchett sort of borrowed the idea...I need to dig through my books on the native beliefs in that area-but that is true-I just cant place it right now to what tribes.

As a side note..World Of Warcraft also pushes this idea in the new expansion.

I know it from Hindu belief but wiki also notes Chinese and native Americans have similar ideas.
