Dudes and dudettes,

After watchin' the dude's movie a few times while listening to a campfire harmonica, one part of the movie just doesn't seem to tie anything together... Why does Jackie Treehorn drug the dude? To me, there's nuthin' about it that contributes to any other plot element.

To me, that part of the plot is like a black steer's tookus on a dark prairie night, with no bottom...

Never mind - I just got it. After boinking Maude (er, 'scuze me - um - "having zesty coitus"), dude says - "He thought I had your father's money, so he got me out of the way while he looked for it."

Mystery solved dudes.  I just weren't payin' enough attention...

Treehorn could have also just partied the Dude into the night having fun with loose bare breasted women on trampolines while Woo and company ransacked the Dude's pad, but decided to slip the Dude a Mickey instead. It's possible that he did so to get the Dude out of the way, but it also possible that Treehorn just wanted to fuck with the Dude and did so by drugging him.

I personally believe the Dude was referencing Treehorn's drugs when he told Maude he was on a "strict drug regimen," a sort of ironic way of more or less laughing a little at what Treehorn had done to him.

I also believe that Treehorn, after kicking the Dude out of his house, called the Malibu cops on him to get the Dude busted and humiliated. You know, the whole "fucking hippy" thing. Treehorn undoubtedly searched the Dude after he passed out for clues as to where the money was, and I believe saw to that the Malibu cops would find the sketch of the cartoon character with the erection on the Dude's person. The fucking fascists!

Of course, this is all IMHO.
