So I am moving out on my own for the first time. Besides a rug to tie the room together I was wondering what my fellow Dudes suggest I get? I am thinking along the lines of stuff to hang on the walls, I am pretty partial to The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali, but I would appreciate any advice or what-have-yous.

I hear you, dude. I'm moving out to my first apartment next month and I'm feeling pretty excited. Obviously the first thing I aquired was a nice rug to tie the room together. I have some movie posters I'd like to take with me, but the new apartment has limited wall-space, so I'm gonna have to think about that one.

well, pipe cleaners are always interesting, and a colorful topic... but then again, cob webs give the place a real "lived-in" look.  ;)

Yeah, I have to agree with Busmum here...when I moved into my first apartment I didn't buy anything but a bed and something to sit on. After all...this is your "First" apartment...you may not stay very long. I was only in my first a few months.
Once you're in it awhile you will know what it needs, but watch the clutter dudes. Keep it simple and allow space for your Qi to breath.
The less baggage you accumulate...the less you will have to drag around with you the next time you move.
But that is just like my opinion dudes. 8)

I myself am moving to my own apartment for at least four years, so I have plenty of time to figure out what I want to see in it. Most probably my pad will become a dump with shit all over the place, though.
