See I wasn't so much ballistics when I was a kid I was more incendiary (technically I think they call it arson).

Am I the only one around here who isn't that in touch with his destructive side?  I've always had a problem with the glorification of weaponry, especially modern guns that seem all too accessible in a lot of supposedly forward-thinking countries.

Despite what those guys in the aborted Dudeism documentary seemed to imply, guns are not dudely.  I mean, I think archery should be considered a nice relaxing passtime, as long as you're aiming at wicker targets, not live ones, but I wouldn't advocate so much dudely worth to it, in spite of it's zenlike nature.  Well, maybe when the world, as a whole, learns some greater sense of responsibility... which, let's face it, is not going to be in my lifespan :)

I simply don't see how someone with such a destructive property to it can be glorified, especially around here.  I guess I'm just an old wimpy pacifist, like poor Smokey :)

I dabbled in pacifism...still do...Rev..I am 40 and have yet to be in a fistfight of any kind. I'm OK with shooting guns as a skill activity -- although I sucketh.

I also dabbled in bottle rockets in my day..but they weren't too destructive...except my dog tried to a eat a few low flyers.

One has to wonder what may have happened at the end if the Dude and Donny's attempts at appeasement had won the day rather than Walter's "what's mine is mine" stand. We don't know how much Walter was carrying but because he chose non-pacifism, one man lost his ear and Donny died..plus Flea at least sustained internal bowling ball injuries..

I think I recall ...the Dude had $4 and Donny had $14 or $18..ever the pragmatists.

Would any of you ponied up to the nihilists or would you chose to fight?

Nope, you're not the only one, Rev Ed. I've always gotten feelings of power and control by means other than physical violence. :) And I think it would be best if people's destructive impulses were limited to razing condemned buildings and the like.

Gosh...what an outburst....guns are bad...blah blah blah... YES They fucking are! I believe the start of this thread was about some bad ass TOY!

I added my two pennies worth about when I was 12 years old...I then progressed to real guns...and had a bit of a revelation in my late 30's....

I'm a pacifist too...and here's my take on guns....Firing a weapon is not a violent act!

Stabbing someone....or throttling them or clubbing them....all violent.....pulling a trigger...about three ounces of pressure on an automatic weapon...not violent at all....however the destruction that causes...off the scale!

If you're going to wield a double handed sword or launch an arrow from a longbow...you need strength and control...you don't need either of those to shoot a pistol...

I had to go through two weeks of intensive training before I was even allowed to hold a real weapon let alone fire one. This included videos of every type of injury (real up close and personal stuff ) that could be sustained from  said weapons. Combat injuries, training "incidents"  and just plain "fooling around shit"!

I carried a weapon nearly every day for about 12 years of my life.

Guns are crap but it's people that are useless.

For personal protection i prefer either coffee mugs, bowling bags, or sharp teeth with which to bit off ears.. Or maybe an amphibious rodent for intimidation purpose and that ain't..that ain't legal neither

I thought this was just a bit of fun, not like they are gonna let me have a high impulse shoulder cannon. Just one of those dudes who digs fireworks, I didn't even so much mind the scud blowing up over my head, as we were able to get out of the way and everyone was fine. Thank you Patriot anti missile system.

A gun is only as dangerous as the person wielding it, so I look at the human, not what kind of stick they carry.

Also I dig the Zen of marksmanship, same as archery, mind, muscle and breathe control. I sometimes wonder how many snipers find enlightenment while waiting for a target, and how do you deal with that in the field? Sometimes enlightement comes from the darkest of places.

Caesar dude

Now that's fucking interesting man!

I got my zen from being on parade....hours and hours of standing rigid to attention....focusing on a distant point....concentrating on a far distant spot on the horizon....I remember being in an other worldly place just focusing on nothing for hours at a time.... I think it was the Prince of Wales who woke me up! :) I believe I shouted my name at him...paused then yelled SIR!

In the field, waiting for an enemy to arrive...(or not) it served me well....same zen like meditation....then all hell breaks loose (or not) lol

As you said look at the human...but do beware the stick.... :)

Eh, it's just my opinion.  I see too many videos posted up of "cool" weapons and people having fun shooting, and I worry it's too much of a promotion of gun usage without any sense of responsibility.

I know that's not the case here, as we're all limber-minded, abiding folks, but still, guns resonate a sense of apprehension with me.  I'm not trying to piss on anyone's run with my opinion, just, y'know... put my thoughts out there.

Yeah, guns don't kill people, rappers do... I mean, people do.  But yet... how many accidents have people had with guns, including children.  Guns, much like war and any sort of violence, for me, belongs in fiction.  Great concepts, horrid reality :)
