There's a lot of truth to what he said- The more money you make, the more you feel like spending.  He doesn't make much and found he didn't need much.  I bet he has no debt either. To me, that's true freedom.
From what is Dudeism trying to liberate us?Thinking that's too uptight.

To what state of being is Dudeism trying to bring us? Just taking it easy, man.

By what means does Dudeism attempt do this? Abiding.

Just a word more on that.  We were not deep in debt, but on our way there. One day I just took a bunch of pictures of everything and started selling stuff on E-bay.  I sold TONS of stuff.  Then I used that money to pay off all the credit card debts. Then I used that extra money to pay off the cars.  Then with all that extra cash every month we made triple principle payments on the house. We paid off the house in a few years like that, took out a second mortgage and paid off all of our student loans with it.  We then almost immediately sold the house for a break even price.

No debt. Freedom.

A very Dudely urban achievement, there, Tripnastic; the first link in the chain of of the wage/consumer slave is in our own heads. Bred to buy.

Banjo Dude

Hrm... Well, speaking as a currently-unemployed dude, I have to say, my concern is a little more along the lines of "How to stay fed and continue living indoors."

Selling one's extraneous stuff sure sounds like a good idea, on the face of it.  The problem therein lies in one's definition of "extraneous."

I'm sorry, my banjos are not extraneous.  Neither is my guitar, nor my sitar.  And, honestly, I'm pretty damn fond of my TV and playstation :P

Alas.  Honestly, if I weren't in a lease in an apartment I share with a dude I've been friends with for twenty years, I'd probably just go hobo for a while and see if I couldn't make it to California where I have this crackpot friend who's an absolute monster with a guitar and who makes a habit of squatting in unoccupied houseboats and stuff.

53. Feeding the Monkey
With but the modest task which is your charge
One may follow the Dude like a Brother Shamus,
Fearing only that you?ll fuck it up;
Yet while following instructions is easy,
believing in nossing is also easy.
That?s two things we learned in ?Nam.
When Pasadena is well-kept
The Valley is left to tumbleweeds
And the bowling alleys are empty.
Darkness warshes over.
Wearing purple jumpsuits,
Recording German techno-pop,
Fucking a stranger in the ass,
Keeping amphibious rodents within the city limits -
These are the ways of the monkey-feeders
And deviations from The Dude.

Tao Te Ching: 53. Distractions
With but a small understanding
One may follow Tao like a main road,
Fearing only to leave it;
Following a main road is easy,
But being sidetracked is also easy.
When palaces are kept up
Fields are left to weeds
And granaries empty.
Wearing fine clothes,
Bearing sharp swords,
Glutting with food and drink,
Hoarding wealth and possessions -
These are the ways of theft
And deviation from Tao.

Doesn't work. I've written two books, and neither sold.

So the trick is you have to write a GOOD book, or something that will sell.

So in short, if you wanna stay unemployed, sell an idea.
You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.
