Well I am watching TBL as we speak, and while in the grocery store the dude pays for some milk and that date is

September 11, 1991.  9/11  1991 (significant in many regards)

THEREFORE  Donnie died on what, september 15?

Self correction, the date is later than that, at least by a week.
You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

Oh for sure, Meekon dude, just kicking a few concepts around (not to mention kicking a few religious undudes around like the asshats in the red robes and goofy looking fish hats), causing some shit for fun and to some degree expressing a few "that's just like my opinion, man" in the family restaurant here. So no harm intended.  ;D

I KNOW MY RIGHTS, MAN! The Supreme has roundly rejected prior restraint!  ;D

I'm staying, enjoying my coffee..................

PS, if you are in the States, or hell, anywhere...........HAPPY TURKEY DAY!!!! Hope it's very dude like for all!

I get a bit skittish because of the way I write sometimes, I am dyslexic, and work in IT, so don't always come across the way I actually mean (write exactly and precisely and forget the twiddly bits other people seem to think should go into e-mails). I have had instances at work where American colleagues have complained that my e-mails are rude, and I've had a couple of tussles with certain individuals on this forum (who funnily enough no longer post here). So occasionally I worry too much that I may have accidentally upset someone.  ;D

Though I am told if you know me and read me e-mails they are very funny in the way I treat people.

Koog, dude, I go with CC's point earlier, there is no suggestion that the film is chronological or that any of the scenes happen in a set time space.

I think the best we can do is say Donny died after the Grocery store scene and the date but not how close to that date he died on, days, weeks or even months could have passed, we will just never know.

Just so dudes know

I happen to be a film maker and a writer, so if anyone is interested in making a movie similar to TBL, and has resources, I want in! I even have a bachelors degree in the damn business, even though it rarely does any good.

We could easilty whip up a script, finding investors is always the hard part.

Set design, location, and all the production jazz, is actually pretty simple.

I dunno. For what it's worth I'm interested.

That may be a possibility, I have been a producer for a while and I know many actors. The only thing is that The Dude and Walter wouldn't be played by the originals, but I suppose if we get someone to do a good enough job to pass off as them I think it could still be a good fan movie. Like that fan made star trek.

Whereabouts do you live?

You're not privy to all the new shit, but that is what you pay me for.
Lot of ins and a lot of outs, but I am keeping my mind limber and working on the case.

ah ha, I see, I've jumped the gun. Well I apologize, and there really is no way to tell the chronology of the movie. What with the bowling season included, it still makes it difficult...

Unfortunately I currently live in Pensacola, but any excuse to move to California regarding the work of dudeism is worthy of attention. I don't have kids and I'm not married so I have the luxury of traveling freely.

Yeah, and here is the problem dudes, if you note when Donny had his heart attack he was wearing a light jacket and The Dude was wearing a bulky sweater. But when Walter and The Dude spread Donny?s ashes they were standing there in shirt sleeves. This tells us that the temperatures had to be cool at night; say 55 to 65, and comfortable during the day; say 75 to 80 maybe.
When do these temperature swings from say 55 at night to 75 or 80 during the day exist in L.A.?

Pretty much from September to May!
Can any of you L.A. dudes narrow it down a little?

And dudes, it's not that I have anything against March 5th as a day to honnor Donny, it's just that I would like a little more of a reason than it's just a date not taken.
Given all the clues in the TBL, I am sure we can narrow it down to at least a month.

Hmmm...Short of calling up the coens (by the way can't wait for the new western flick this dec) i suggest if anyone has the time and the patience, to use the approximate method of star charting, mapping and what not.

I dont remember if there is a tilt shot of the night sky when he's laying on the ground, but if there is you could go to the position and do a little astronimcal alignment, or possible if you're really really smart, you could go to the bluffs and take the suns position for that day and easily ascertain it's seasonal position, that would at least give you the month, however it would have to be a direct shot of the sun in the film, simply going off shadows wouldn't work, because even in daylight filming high watt tungsten and day glo's are used to pop the scene, however, the rocks in the shots were not soaked or wet down so maybe it was bright and reflective enough that day and remote enough to not be an issue...

You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

 8) Okay, here's my tuppence worth: most - if not all (Meekon would  know) religious holidays are a mash of older 'sacred' days (Christmas was plastered over Saturnalia which, before that was Yule or Solstice - pretty much the same with Easter . . and , you know, what-have-you. In this regard they are all a fiction. Folks just plumped for a day (that was already there - or near abouts - to reinforce the new religious order). The Day of the Dead is the next day after All Saints Day, blah, blah, blah. As regards TBL: the day wasn't scripted - as others have  pointed out - in this fiction it ain't there . . so you are free to pick. Personally I don't really go in for religious holidays . . I don't feel it. If it were me I would have a day that was set aside to remember all Dudes that have passed and call it Dead Dudes Day (or whatever) and have it, as near as you can get to the day you think Donny died. At least with a day that was set aside for real Dudes that have died we (or rather, I) might be inspired to burn a candle and a J. Just a thought. Abide.

Dead Dude Day: This one was a bastard - green screen (on the original movies) screwed a lot of
the editing up; so I had to keep chopping and putting them through various different treatments. In the end I just got fed-up and threw it up on You Tube, anyway. This one features footage of Sunken City

I've said it before, I like the Erisian Religious Holiday concept, just declare one whenever you want. Much like Bender In Fururama celebrating Robonica.

As I mentioned I have been looking into the Day Donny Died. Been running through TBL looking for more clues. But it's what I didn't find that I found interesting. There are no decorations!
Ok, if we start with Ralph's on September 11, 1991 then follow with The Dude and his landlord Marty talking about "tomorrows already the 10th" which I think we can assume would be the 10th of October, then the day Donny died must be in 1992. Why? Because there are no decorations anywhere to be seen. In late October there would have been Halloween decorations on houses and in the family diner, in November there would have been Thanksgiving decorations and in December there would have been Christmas decorations everywhere, even in the bowling alley. Given there were none at all to be seen anywhere, and that they are rolling in the semis, which do not usually that place until near the end of the regular league season which usually runs September to March or April, I think we can rule out Donny dying any time in 1991. And because of the weather I mentioned before, where the day Donny died he was wearing a jacket and The Dude a sweater at night, but The Dude and Walter were spreading his ashes on the beach in just shirtsleeves, it could not have been in January or February since it is way to cold even during the day in those months to be running around on the beach in just shirt sleeves. And in February there would be Valentine decorations in the diner windows.
April would be a little too late for the semis, so it had to be March where the temperatures are pretty much right and we would no longer see any type of decorations for anything for a few more months.
On March 5th it was 55 that night and would require a jacket or sweater. It was also a Thursday. We know the team bowled on Wednesdays, but they practiced on Thursdays, which is what they had just finish doing when they were attacked by Nihilists.

Like I said, I had no problem with March 5th, I just needed more of a reason then "it's not already taken"!

;D Phew! Well through dogged determination you got your date, Dude - kudos! So, is it going to be "St. Donny's Day", "Dead Dude's Day", "Ash Day" or "What Have You Day"?

cckeiser

Sorry dude, it's just the day Donney died, I guess.
But that's like just my opinion dude.

Far fucking out. Sounds like it will really tie the story together.
