Title: N00b question: Does Dudeism have any kind of weekly services?
Post by: tbboy13 on August 18, 2009, 01:17:37 PM
I have to do a paper for my sociology class about a religion different from my own and I have to one of their services. I was wondering if they had any kind of religious service that I could go to (in the Atlanta area). If not, maybe I can convince my professor to just let me sit and have a chat about Dudeism with one of the priests. The point is to compare it to my own religion, similarities and differences.

I'm a priest, but not near Atlanta. Chat with the whole clergy here on the forum dude!

I'm actually considering holding a weekly Sunday service, most likely at a local bar and before noon. Already found an ideal location but I'm still working out exactly what the service would entail. I don't want to be too preachy, and for me its really about having a Caucasian early in the day and not feeling guilty about it. But spreading the vibe of the Dude is a worthy and admirable cause no matter how the message is delivered.

All a person needs to do is go to the website and fill out a form to be ordained.
http://dudeism.com/ordination/ (http://dudeism.com/ordination/)
It is a "religion" based on a character from a movie.

You be the judge but in the context of a college paper I don't believe that it rises to the level of actual religion.
I'd choose another personally.

Here is what you do watch the movie smoke a jay and drink a Caucasian. Bam now you understand the whole durned human comedy. And if you need some interviews talk to any dude on the forum it's kind of a church. If you need some quotes have a look see at the Dude de Ching. Or just make the whole thing up and run with it we can write it of as an acid flash back.

I don't think you could pick a better religion to compare. There are so many huge differences between dudeism and anything you could write volumes.

I also think writing a comparison between one of the organized religions (with top to bottom structure/classes/casts laid out) and Dudeism (a very unorganized religion).

Some Dudeists are in it just for the party, some of us take it more seriously.  As long as we all get along we're all Dudes and that's fine.

A thought my wife just threw at my keyboard, "The Dude isn't a real person, the Dude is what we want humanity to be like."  (Sounds like a quote from LA Story)

The Dude is like the Buddha, it is not important whether or not the Dude existed, what is important is the example he gives to us that it may be possible to live life the Dudeist way.

Again I find myself re-iterating Dudeism is not prescriptive so we don't have weekly services, what would the point be?

I'm digging this flow, man. You do whatever feels natural and good to you and find that dude inside of you. Very nice ideas, man.  :D

Fuck it, man. It's just as worthy a religion as any. Don't let those fuckers at the league office in Rome convince you otherwise.

I think it's a winning idea for a young urban achiever. If you make the paper entertaining enough, but with enough intellectual meat on our basis in Taoism, your professor should dig it. If he doesn't, occupy the building, man!

I personally believe that a Dudeist service should number no more than 3-6 (a bowling team or two), that it must occur at a bar (unless one or more of the participants are recovering alcoholics), and no sermons should be prepared beforehand.

I think it comes down to getting a good grade.
I'm just not sure that in the context of a college course we'd qualify as a "real" religion.
Depends on the instructor.
I'd clear it with him/her before committing.

College was a bit hazy for me as well, but I remember most professors would reward students who "thought outside the box", but I think they also rewarded work that was a break from the mundane norm. You're right in that it depends on each individual professor, but I'd look online for information on the professor rather than asking them directly.

Colleges, or more accurately their respective professors, usually fall into one of two categories.

1. Those that teach you HOW to think. These dudes would likely be cool with your paper if it's academic in tone, well researched, and demonstrates critical thinking.

2. Those that teach you WHAT to think. Stick with comparing/contrasting Romeo & Juliet to A Mid-Summer Night's Dream or Christianity to Judaism.

Find out which one you're in before selecting a potentially controversial topic or one that could seem irreverent at first glance. Otherwise, you could lose them before you even get a chance.

Just ask the professor about using Dudeism.

I took a couple sociology courses back when I was in university. My experience was that to get an a on a report it needed two things 1) disscuss the lesson at the core of the report and 2) this is almost more important make it interesting. Reports are boring as fuck and the teacher has to read and grade a ton of them. If all you do is make him laugh you can pass if you vaguely tie it into the point they wanted your gold. But that's just like my opinion man.

I did the same thing. Its about making your paper stand out in some way.
