I'm the Dude
So that's what you call me
If you're into the whole brevity thing

In haiku format 3-5-3 it would sound more like this:

I'm Duderino
If you're into brevity
You can call me Dude

My ball is rolling
straight into the gutter
I should let go now

liking them all, Dudes - keep rolling. A big thanks to Forumdude for promptly clearing up that rash of spam, there. Have I mentioned before how much I admire his knees? You know, an inspiration strikes!  We need to get a cast of DL's knees and then we could make 'em into cups/mugs to sell to the faithful - help feed the monkey (save up for a site of our own?). Put me down for a couple of cups . . why stop at the knees?  8) Bet the Pope is kicking himself, Dudes - all that kneeling though, wouldn't want to look up his dress to see his knees, man - doesn't bare thinking about. Still, knee-cups have got Pope-on-a-rope soap beat, hands down (or up or allover).

Right chaps now you have mastered the simple form (17 syllables) we can take it up a notch.

It is common for westerners to write what is simply a seventeen syllable sentence, now where there is no problem with this, older (stricter) Haiku schools suggest other forms:

5
7
5

syllables that is.

Also there is the position of an initial idea (5 syllables),
Then an alternative idea (7 syllables),
Then an idea that links the two (5 syllables)

My own favourite poet and master of the form is Santōka M. Taneda (now better known as
Santōka) in the beautiful "Mountain Tasting: Zen Haiku".

The man spent his life wandering around the mountains getting pissed, and writing poetry, a true Dude.

"there were two main streams in the haiku world: one
working in a more or less traditional form using modern
themes, and the other, the shinkeikō, or new-development,
movement, which abandoned the standard 5-7-5 syllable pat-
tern and the obligatory use of a word to indicate the season,
or kigo."

to quote "Mountain Tasting"

But I do defer to Santōka Taneda: Haiku Master (http://eleventhstack.wordpress.com/2010/01/25/santoka-taneda-haiku-master/)

Quote from: Santōka Taneda: Haiku Master website
The one thing most people do know about haiku is inaccurate; haiku in English is not a 17 syllable, three-line poem with 5 syllables to the first line, 7 to the second line, and 5 to the third line.  At least, it is not only that.  It is approximately that way in Japanese (although Japanese haiku are written in one line, not three), but in English 10 to 14 syllables more approximates the length of Japanese haiku because the rough Japanese equivalent to syllables, morae, are much shorter.  Of course, the issue is more complicated than this;  here is one of the best (http://dictionary.babylon.com/japanese/japanese-alphabet/), simplest explanations I could find.

The reason I quote Santōka (http://www.terebess.hu/english/haiku/taneda.html) is because he is a none conformist to the strict rules of haiku.

Quote from: Santoka Taneda
"Real haiku is the soul of poetry. Anything that is not actually present in one's heart is not haiku. The moon glows, flowers bloom, insects cry, water flows. There is no place we cannot find flowers or think of the moon. This is the essence of haiku. Go beyond the restrictions of your era, forget about purpose or meaning, separate yourself from historical limitations?there you will find the essence of true art, religion, and science."
? Santoka Taneda (Mountain Tasting: Haiku and Journals of Santoka Taneda)

One of my own:
Quote from: meekon5

WREN MORNING.

WITH THE MORNING PISS,
WRENS ALL ROUND THE BRANCHES,
HOMELESS MUCH LIKE ME.

and for Dudeism

Quote from: meekon5

My river of life,
Flowing where it will go,
Brings me here with you.

As a long term Haiku abuser myself one thing I should warn you all about:

Haiku Twitch.

Now you have found the art form people will discover you hiding in corners, or even walking down the street, sitting on buses, muttering away to yourself, manically drumming out syllables and counting, it looks fairly bizarre.

Feigning ignorance,
swallows them ever slowly.
Now who is the fool?

( I wrote that about 5 years ago as I was finally realizing that I was beginning to know actually know less about the world and life as I was aging, and that although I could still use socratic irony to learn from, that it was actually making me look stupid to others, and the more you use it, the less respectable you become in the eyes of others, because there are simply more stupid people on earth that don't understand, and if you pretend to be stupid in a world of morons, you will be forgotten and ignored very quickly. The weak minded have no patience, or grasp of advanced learning mechanics. And in the age of information, it is easily manipulated or misinterpreted and distributed as the truth. So ultimately I decided that feining ignorance, can only cause harm, unless used in the teaching method to raise questions in a classroom enviornment. Using outside that enviornment, is hostile and dangerous. As with any other lie, or mistruth. It only causes more suffering and misunderstanding. The haiku itself reflects the question to it's author and it's audience as the truth can often be lost in translation by it's interpreters.)

As a former philosophy student and aspiring teacher, I use the Socratic method everywhere.  He's one of my favorite philosophers.  As an "undesirable" member of society (hippie, Dudeist, activist, anti-religion, gay-rights supporting, tree-hugging, broke ass loudmouth) I just like pissing people off. ; )

But that's just, like, my opinion, man....

LOVE IT!!!! That last one reminded me of a poem I once wrote:

Sunday Morning with Jack Kerouac

playing Spider Solitaire
at the computer
on a lazy Sunday morning
listening to Jack
oops!
my pants fell off
Now I have to pee
from laughing
sitting on the toilet
and laughing
I'm ready to return
not yet
sitting on the toilet
again
laughing
and peeing
thinking of putting
my computer
in front of
the toilet
then
I can work
while laughing
and peeing.

Odd, I was going to put a Kerouac disc on this morning (just acquired a CD player and dug out the dusty old MP3 disc I brought with me to US land); chose Tom Waits, instead. Love this poem, and what a great idea; will need a little desk, though - to put in front of the toilet.

Thanks Dude, it has made an appearance here and there. Legend has it (when I get round to scribing it properly) that the rug-pisser juice was transformed into the image you see before you. Transformed by the power of the Dude Vibration (that we all hope to be blessed with. Adude) permeating the very weave of the rug after having lain in the Dudes presence for so long. In short, the rug was (and some say, still is) charged with Dudeness which could of course be preposterous bollocks (you decide).

(Meekon5) Nice one Dude.

@Uber Dude & M5: I think quite a few of us were aware (and occasional abusers) of the haiku form/genre, already - some weren't; whatever, I am really digging what Dudes are coming up with.  ;D Enjoyed yours, M5 - any more? Kudos for getting the ball rolling, Uber. It might be a good idea - just rolling here - at some point (a few months, year) to collect Dude scribblings (on various threads) with a view to publishing a book. To be sold to raise funds for a Dude project (any more news on the Dude Internet Site?) or KIVA, or some such. I dunno, a Forum Annual*, perhaps - with art work. musings - you all know the type of thing (I'm thinking of Python books for inspiration).  8)
* or Dudeism Annual - with 'best' Dudespaper articles of the year, too.

The hubby and I were talking last night about maybe using some haikus in the book that is being written now, Tao of the Dude.  What do you think about that?
Title: Re: The Haiku Korner
Post by: cakebelly on January 08, 2011, 12:17:51 PM
For some reason I thought the Tao of The Dude was done and dusted (save for editing) - don't know why I thought that. If they are still looking for stuff - sure, why not. I still like the idea of an annual publication, though - think it would be fun.

Spam: I reported this fucker yesterday - appears to  be dedicating a lot of time to pissing us off (a pissed-off christy? dude with a grudge or just a bot? seems personal). Anyway, fuck it - can't keep pace with latest posts)

Possibly, but then there's a danger that the dude-kus may be kinda contrived (to fit into a category); or a sense may develop that they are being judged worthy of book inclusion - and so lose any spontaneity/fun. Then I could be over-thinking it. Fuck it, do other Dudes wanna roll on this idea?

Shit dude, all haikus are contrived. Just go ahead a do it cakes. Set it up somewhere on the forum then wait to see who rolls.
I think once the dudes get the basic idea you should have at least a few contributing...maybe. But ya gotta remember rev cakebelly sir, this IS the dudeist forum...low standards and even lower expectations and all that!

You could be right, there, CC - you could be right; I can't get comfy on my rug today. As to doing it I guess that's what we've been doing. If Uber wants to set up a category or two we could see how we go (in my head I'll be rolling with the annual idea, though).   ;)

I guess we should first come up with topic ideas.  How formal or informal you want those topics to be is the question.  I'm thinking things like, Departed Dudes, Dudeism, Oat Soda, Bowling, Driving Around, Great Dudes, The Dude Himself, Acid Flashback (for the ones that really don't make sense or are about actual flashbacks), The Female Form, Aggression, Nihaliasts, Human Paraquats, etc.... chime in everybody...

You could be joking about the chimes but that wasn't a topic suggestion just away to say "state you input".  I like Rug-pissers a lot.  I thought of taking them from the De Ching too but I think we should be more informal since it's for fun and not meant to be a Holy book.  At some point we should finalize a lit and figure out how to set it up for submissions.  All input is helpful. Sorry I'm a bit distracted today as I am stuck on the news about this mass shooting over here in America.  Pretty scary stuff.

Title: Re: The Haiku Korner
Post by: cakebelly on January 08, 2011, 05:36:23 PM
Wasn't aware of the shooting - doesn't seem to be a lot of info at the moment; people are saying that folk shouldn't rush to politicize it but you can't tell me that the ass-bagger movement and all it's evil Muppet masters haven't gone a long way to encouraging this kind of atmosphere. You could tell it was bound to happen eventually when they made a hero out of the asshole who took his gun to church awhile ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markmardell/2011/01/febrile_politics_of_giffords_s.html (http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/markmardell/2011/01/febrile_politics_of_giffords_s.html)

Yes, the chimes thing (as stated under the dudeku) was a gag. Just personally not into the mythologizing an imaginary character any more than it is now. That's just my opinion and I wouldn't object to a thread - maybe the spirit of Dudeism needs to be explored more than the figure. Anyway, I wouldn't do too much planning (that involves too much work - you don't want to end up wasting your time); let's just throw up a thread or two and see how it grabs others.
Title: Re: The Haiku Korner

Oh yeah, I don't like that either.  I was thinking The Dude Himself would cover any haikus about the Dude from the movie, the Dudely Llama or even Jeff Bridges.  How do you want to do the thread.  Maybe a large heading of Dudeku Book (or something like that.  Then subheading of each topic so submissions could go to the right place.  That could make for easier editing later.

BTW, I like your take on the Tea Baggers and would love to share it with a friend...with your permission of course. : )

Yeah, now I can open up a world of pain on any spammers ass!
And dude...I brought the subject of digitalbuddha being a membership moderator like we discussed, but the Dudely Lama didn't make a reply yet. Not  sure if this type of forum will allow that action. But as the forumdude mentioned there are a few things on this version of the forum that needs fixing. I poked around a little but it warns that unless you really know what your doing not to go any further.
That sounded like a good idea as I didn't want to hit the wrong button and delete the whole forum!
