I was reading in another thread in this category a discussion about translated versions of the Big Lebowski, http://dudeism.com/smf/index.php?topic=671.30,and I thought that was fucking interesting enough for its own topic.

I have both the Italian and the original version. The translation is quite horrible; imagine that they called the Dude "Drugo", which here is the same name given to the killers of "Clockwork Orange". And, just to give another example "if you are not into the whole brevity thing" has been translated as "if you like giving diminutives".

In the Spanish translation, of the Big Lebowski, The Dude is called 'El Nota', which translates as 'The Note'.

I was messing around with freetranslation.com, and it told me that The Dude translates as el petimetre, which translates back as the fop, which means: "a man who is preoccupied with and often vain about his clothes and manners; a dandy." I know that there is a lot lost in translation, especially from a website, but I thought this was all pretty hilarious.

Any Spanish speaking dudes have any comments on 'El Nota'? A google image search of 'El Nota' yields mostly Big Lebowski results, so maybe it's something worth looking into to expand the demographics and nomenclature of our religion.

EDIT

I just came across this blog, http://rantomat.blogspot.com/2006/01/el-nota.html. It states that:
QuoteEl Nota won't be found in any slang dictionary.

It's a term used almost exclusively in southern spain, seville to be exact. It means, quite literaly, "The Dude".

As regards the Italian version another great translation is:"I'm the walrus" as "Oblad? Oblad?". At least they left the word "vagina" as in the original, maybe because in Italian is the same.
Yeah well, that's just, ya know, like, your opinion, man.

Oblad?  Mayhaps it's Obladee, Obladah, life goes on, bra!  La la la la life goes on...which is a very Dude song...

You are right man, I've missed some letters.  :P It's a beautiful song, a kind of Dudeist hymn.  8) But the translation of the movie is awful anyway. I watch it in the original version.
