Spam bots

Hey just saw that we were infested by spambots over the last few weeks. I've deleted most of them I think but if you see any, please report them and I'll deal with it. Some of the spam protection was disabled so hopefully now it'll be less full of nihilists and dipshits around here.

Some of the anti spam measures don't seem to be working properly. Shit is still getting through. I'll try to figure it out

Have you tried putting a reCAPTCHA challenge in the registration form?

From what I remember, all I had was a question of "What is the Dude's last name?", reCAPTCHA would probably be a bit better, and there's a mod already made for it (can't post external links otherwise I'd link to it). Plenty of other ways to cut down on spam too. (I'm sure you got this, dude)

Yes there's a captcha (not recaptcha). Got a bunch of anti spam measures but they weren't working for a month or so. Thanks for the tip though!

That's right, now that I think about it I do remember the captcha, in my experience reCAPTCHA has generally been a bit better (more features from what I know). Only other things I can think of is to go through and delete any accounts that were involved in spam.

Pretty sure you can also do things to check user data against certain databases (things like Akismet or Project Honeypot, pretty sure there's smf mods for this too)

Are they using all different IPs? (Of course its not difficult to spoof an IP, hell you could, in theory, even use a tool like SentryMBA to spam from different IPs)
