Maybe the monkey can learn to not be fed so much

Here's my dilemma man.  I have a job that allows me to feed the monkey with little to no problem.  I only work 4 days a week and live comfortably for my particular lifestyle.  But when I'm at my job, the Dude disappears and Walter takes over.

Now, the easy answer is, "get a new job man" and yeah, I hear ya, but here's the thing.  I'm in my late 40's with no real education to speak of or experience doing anything other than driving trucks and random manufacturing gigs.  I can find a job driving a truck anywhere, that's not an issue.  The issue is that most of those jobs require 6 days a week and 60 hours a week and quite frankly, that's just exhausting.  I'm too old and too tired to work that many hours.  I would if I absolutely had to, but I don't have to and life is too short to spend it working that much.  At least for me it is...been there, done that and have no desire to relive it.

I guess I need to either find something that makes me happy and allows me to continue on my path to inner Dudeness without the Walterian side encroaching every time I punch the time clock, or learn how to drive a local delivery truck under heavy sedation.  The latter really isn't an option.

Perhaps I can lower my expectations of myself...lower my standards.  This is the first gig I've ever had that pays me well enough that I don't have to worry about Marty knocking on my door every month and reminding me that tomorrow is already the tenth and if I would, just slip the rent under his door.
Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber

It's about percentages.
The best we can hope is to up our Dude percent and lower our Walter percentage.
And about learning to not"Walter" over stuff that doesn't require drawing lines.
You have to ask yourself what is most realistic. Finding a situation that doesn't bring out your Walter or honing your abiding skills.
This is the age old question.
This is our concern Dude.

BikerDude's got it. Abiding doesn't mean creating the perfect environment but instead make due with what you got. If life gives you lemons then learn to love lemonade. Feeding the monkey is tricky and it's perhaps the only weakness with the movie that it's never really addressed how Dude earns enough money for his modest pad and dingy car and Jays and White Russians.

As for your job: well if you like the money and the low amount of work days then maybe just accept and abide by a certain amount of "Walther" in your life. Remember: fuck it - that's your answer for everything.

The lesson I've learned over and over is to keep your options open.
ALWAYS be looking to improve your beach community.
Apply for better stuff all the time.
Over the years I've ridden a number of gigs into the ground and found myself with my rod or Johnson in my hand scrambling for another paycheck.
It's best to shop around while you don't NEED to find something.
It's best to negotiate from a position of relative power.
Abide, but always be on the look out for the venue that you want to perform your cycle.
