This has been all over my news feed today. Hope it's true.

Are you guys down with this, or do think these characters shouldn't be tinkered with?

I guess the good thing about it is that it would be hard to really change the character too much given that he was never really fleshed out all the much in the movie. A brief backstory and a few moments of yelling leaves the door wide open as far as character development goes. My hope is that they come up with an original story to tell, it would be all to easy for them to just make the same movie but with Jesus as the main character instead of giving him his own story.

Well dude, those are good words. Should be interesting to see.

Now, that's interesting, man. Turturro's been asking the Coens about a sequel for years, they shrug it off, and he may just go off and reprise the character in an unauthorized sequel?Meanwhile, Bridges says he'd like to see TWO sequels and even references an idea very similar to a screenplay from this-a-here website? Huh.

The fly in the ointment, of course, is the Coens. They're the heart and soul of it all. If they're not front and center in the process, it's not going to work. And, it sound like they're just not interested. I get that. You can't force genius. The Coens follow the muses. If they didn't, their movies would be like all the other heartless shite out there now. It's not perfect, but I'd rather see them put out another great movie that is burning holes in their heads than force through a Lebowski sequel that they don't really feel.

RandoRock

Well said jgiffin. You can always tell when a sequel just doesn't have the heart behind it, Dumb and Dumber To is a perfect example. The first one was a classic but the sequel just seemed forced and because of that we ended up with essentially the same movie just set 20 years later. The only thing that a potential sequel might have going for it is the fact that due to the real life deaths they would be forced to create an original story for The Dude. They wouldn't be able to take the easy way out and have The Dude deal with the Big Lebowski and Brandt.

I've always thought a decent sequel could be The Dude's little Lebowski looking him up, the timeline makes sense and given what Maude said about her expectations of The Dude it's reasonable to believe that he didn't have much involvement in the child's life. That's an easy, yet realistic way to throw The Dude into another situation where he is out of his element and it wouldn't just be the same recycled plot.

Surely there's a "second coming" joke in here somewhere...

I got my own special way

Yeah honestly that's the one thing that the first movie didn't cover very well: what it means to be a parent in the world of the Dude.  If the Coens really could create a sequel about the little lebowski that helped inform that dudeist perspective on keeping the whole dern human comedy going and balancing responsibility with a dude lifestyle.  It probably wouldn't be a hit but it could be a lesson.

I know this thread hasn't had any activity for a while but I didn't want to start a new thread. There's more information about the rebirth of The Jesus!

Far Fuckin' Out, Mang!

I have been waiting in the wings to see if it was more than just rumours. I guess cameos by The Dude, Walter and Donny would be too much to ask, but if we will it dudes... (I think you're smelling what I'm selling!).

jgiffin

"The trio, according to a statement, also makes 'enemies with a gun-toting hairdresser' in the flick, which is an homage to Les Valseuses, a 1974 film released in France that featured Gérard Depardieu and Patrick Dewaere."

Quotes like this make me think it might just be almost possible to recreate the magic of the first film. I mean, fuck, how random and beautifully obscure is that?
