I go fishing to relax occasionally and sometimes the hardest part to remember is just to do it to relax. I have nothing against those who make a sport or a competition out of it but generally when I go I just take something to drink, a book or headphones, or just abide in nature while occasionally minding the hook and rod and all that. Done in the right frame of mind, it can be a true spiritual experience. Get too caught up in the actual fishing part, and it can turn you into a cussing maniac with a tangled line and a hook up the ass.

My neighbour recently gave me all of his fly fishing gear, which has rekindled my interest.

I used to fish from the beach and rocks, but have neither the time or patience to do either anymore. I cannot be bothered to hike for miles, only to stand in one spot and waste bait in the rain.

Occasionally I take the kids tiddler bashing at the harbour, but that's all lately.

I used to love fly fishing (about 20 yrs ago) and think that there is something pure about it compared to others forms of fishing. I also promised my neighbour (who is 74 and not got the ability to cast a fly anymore) the first fish if I did decide to go again as a thank you for the gear.

Based on the people I know who fish as a hobby, I'd say both would happen simultaneously. 

Actually, fishing kept food on the table (literally sometimes), clothes on our backs, and a roof over our heads when I was growing up.  Dad worked for Pan-Pacific Fisheries, a cannery on Terminal Island in the Port of Los Angeles that processed tuna for human and animal consumption.  When they opened in 1946 they were the most state-of-the-art facility in the U.S., and at one time were the only full-service cannery in the continental U.S. (meaning everything from catching the fish to shipping it cooked and canned was performed in-house, and not sub-contracted).  Increased regulation forced them to shut down in 1988, but the facility and 15 others like it are on the Los Angeles Conservancy's list of historical buildings so they currently sit abandoned on the island in various states of disrepair, awaiting someone with big bucks to repurpose them.
