I bought the flight simulator add-on of this aircraft I love it so much.  This is the second time they said they were retiring it... let's see!

It's turned into a fight to keep the A10.
The story was that they would use the F35 for close support.
But I would think that it wouldn't be the perfect platform for that.
Personally I have to believe that they are moving toward drones for this role.
They deny that. Boeing has come up with a system to convert F16's into "optionally piloted QF-16 target drones" that can be used for close support. Basically they are totally expendable.

During Dessert Storm I arrived to do runway repairs and there was a huge fire just down the runway from me. It turned out that an A-10 came in with no landing gear, belly slid, but at the last moment turned over and killed the pilot. Sad day.

The same day though I got to watch an F-16 come in with no front gear, and do some amazing flying, he made it, crazy thing to watch though.
