I just finished a great book that I think you might enjoy called Autopilot: The Art and Science of Doing Nothing by Andrew Smart. It's about what happens in the brain when we SIT (stimulus independent thought), let your brain have a Shabbas. Basically, there is something called the Default Mode Network which swings into action when you aren't tasked focused letting your brain make the literal connections and producing occasional flashbacks and insights. It's a good read dudes!
