I've been un-employed for 4 years . So to make money I pick up cans on the side of the roads around where I live . I park my old beat up truck out of the way and do my thing . Well one time I get back to my truck after a 2 mile walk and no truck !!! So I call the cops .  Turns out I was parked at the edge of a cops yard , he wigged out and had it towed !!! Just a pure cleft asshole . So I call that guy Larry now . Then another time I'm out picking and a cop rides by . I allways wave to them - kind of let them know I 'm cool . Well he pulls into a drive way in front of me and is waiting for me . We talk for a minute or two then back up arrives . Now I'm thinking WTF ??? Turns out I matched the description of a guy that had threatend a cop in a near by town . I checked out ok and kept on doing my thing . I know they are doing their job , just making it hard to do mine .

Check your local ordinances. Some have a 24-hour notice period before a parked car can be towed from private property (note: there are usually exceptions for emergencies or if the vehicle is blocking a business's entry/exit). Taking that podunk Himmler to small claims court and making him pay your towing fees, etc. would be justice par excellence.

Or could piss him off so badly he makes it his mission to make your life hell. Know your enemy before you go to war with them.

Again about a week ago I'm out pickin cans and here comes a patrol car over the hill . He says that some one called me in , so he runs my name and b-day . No warrants on my file . I just wish that people would take a minute to see what I'm doing and leave me alone . It's not the most glamours job in the world . In fact our county started a volunteer trash pick up . So it's just me and my buddy trying to stay ahead of 20 + people .We cant hang with that so it's time to go where they haven't got yet or go into other counties that don't jump on the " oo-oo  me-too " wagon . Dudes I tell you the bare is taking a good bite out of me .

Good point. Always figured there was a reason I had more arch-enemies than Spiderman.

Last week my wife and I emptied a plastic 1-gallon milk bottle and a few cans after I had taken the trash receptacles to the curb for the next morning's pick up, so I walked 'em out in the wee hours of the morning.  There was a young man going through the items in the recyclables receptacle, and when he saw me approaching his demeanor changed to one of apprehension and he backed away from the receptacle.  I said hello and asked if he could use any of the items I had in my hands, and handed them to him after he replied "Yes".  He seemed puzzled by my being nice to him, and I could only imagine how some idiots might give him a hard time for going through their trash, so I told him to feel free to take whatever he wanted.  I mean, if someone has thrown something in the trash the odds are they don't want it anymore, so what difference does it make if someone else does want it?  If someone is willing to go out in the middle of the night (or whenever) and go through other peoples' refuse to try to find items they can sell or recycle to make a few extra bucks, more power to them!

Agreed to the utmost. The Supreme Court ruled you have no right of privacy to the trash you set out in public...much like it has roundly rejected prior restraint. If someone can use something you discarded, who the hell should object? Now, don't be a goddamn badger and spread my shit all over the place. My wife is gonna make me pick that up.

Yeah, I'd have a problem with someone throwing my (or anyone else's) trash all over the neighborhood while they're going through it.  And if they're performing their salvage operations in the middle of the night, they should be courteous and make an effort to keep the noise to a minimum.  But other than that...   ;D

Well can't gripe about all the cops . A few days ago , here comes another one . Slows down and asks me if thats my truck parked at the church . I reply yes , he asks if I meant to leave the keys in the door - oh s#^t on my part . He goes back and gets my keys for me .    Al -  yep any time I see something sticking out of a garbage can . I'll dig and get it out then make sure that I don't leave a mess . If there's a beer bottle in the yard I'll pick it up and put it in the trash or what ever . Kind of a karma thing .
