"safety" is the government term here for "revenue raising"

though that said (not like the locals can say this they aren't aloud)

17 million bucks of taxpayer money in a state with 5.7 million people in it , its well known locally that the speed cameras don't do SHIT and drivers that will and do speed simply slow down for the 5 seconds it takes to get past the camera and the speed up again so i am hard pressed too find actual reasoning for the move to spend all this money..

At least out here the cameras are sub-contracted out, so a private company decides who is in violation of what, sends out the tickets, and gets a big cut of the fine.
