Also where does swami come from is that a dudest thing I missed or your choice?. No disrespect or trying to start something. I have seen it pop up a few times and I'm just wondering if I missed something.

Rev. Iconocclesiastes

Shagbeard, I joined with the Dudeists in order to be a part of some kind of community of somewhat like-minded individuals and for intellectual stimulation, and not so I could kiss the asses of a bunch of cliqueish, know-it-all  British hypocrites who think that they are better than Christians like you and me.  No, I am finishing my coffee.  It looks like they are trying to turn Dudeism into an actual cult.

This brings up an idea from my beer soaked limber mind; Dudeist Degrees. Something such as a "DDP." "Doctor of Dudeist Philosophy" or "DDR" "Doctor of Dudeist Religion" "DTE" "Doctor of Takin' Er Easy" (...this, after 2 beers; who knows what beer 3 or 4 will come up with).

Thoughts, dudes?

I dig this idea. I don't see how having a degree makes your standing any higher or lower it's a recognition of your contribution to the philosophy. As a side could you define " groupthink" to me I'm not sure what you mean there.

I call it "the group mind;" that is to say, various thinking on a matter by dudes together coming up with an idea higher or better than a single dude would come up with perhaps. A synergy of minds.

So a bunch of dudes coming up with ideas together is a bad thing?.

The_Sleevez

Also I am not seeing anybody hating on Christianity here. I Saw one post awhile ago that got dealt with by the moderator. I personally have no problem with any religion as long as they don't throw it in my face.

It is when an individual's beliefs and means of expressing them become subordinate to the group agenda.  Or as that page says, "The group is more concerned with maintaining unity than with objectively evaluating their situation, alternatives and options. The group, as a whole, tends to take irrational actions or overestimate their positions or moral rightness."

See, this is why I debated even posting on this entire forum anymore. I try to contribute in a good way, and I get shit on.

Ok so mob mentality I dig it. How does that connect to degrees for dudeiest philosophical contributions?.

The_Sleevez

Well anytime you bring up religion there will usually be a debate. That's kind of what the forum is about. To discuss things I think everyone is doing that. You can't get bent out of shape when somone questions you about what your posting.

This is one of those quote places hmmm "like and 8 year old walking into the middle..."
Look, since I been on here I seen posts down right rude. Not going to say who any are, but know that one thread you refer to is not it. Seen some new topic threads made just to bitch about it. Not hard to find them either.

I am leaving it alone and will try to be cool, but know that I have no agenda to preach and sick and tired of hearing about this and seeing the classic dont post if your going to.. It leads right to reactionary shit. Chill out, relax and abide. Oh and one should see the true meaning of abide in the Old Eglish, it was ver enlightening for me. Peace

Also at the risk of kicking off another rant about hateing on Christianity. You say your against a hierarchy in dudeism but Christianity has a vary well established hierarchy. again not picking on your religion it's totally cool to be Christian just looking to understand what your saying a see your point of view here.

To me,the idea of earning a "Degree in Dudeism" is an oxymoron.

Next, I'll repeat myself.  If you do not like what I have to write, then don't read my writiings.

If you choose to read what I contribute anyway, and do not like what I wrote, then follow this old wisdom: if you do not have anything nice to say, then  do not say anything at all (or write it, as the case may be).

And last: not to boast, but I do hold a degree in Social Psychology.  What's more, I graduated summa cum laude.  I am not bragging; it's just true.  I wrote my undergraduate Capstone Project (kind of like a "thesis lite") on modes of institutional groupthink.  So the topic of groupthink is a topic that I reckon that I know a thing or two about.

Please read up on the experiments carried out by Milgram (about obedience to perceived authority), Asch (about conformity to  group expectations), and Zimbardo (about the power of situational roles), as well as the studies designed by Tajfel and Turner (on "ingroup favoritism and the illusion of outgroup homogeneity") in order to learn more, and in order to glean more insight into the power of group dynamics.
