i think the dude knows the balance of what to voice and when to realize when others' ears are closed, and that its not worth it. The dude clearly left the alley, and his friends to focus on what he knew was right. He would not let the aggression stand.

I would say this kind of Dudeism is very tempting when you are trying to escape something and get into Taoism/Buddhism/Dudeism as the new painkiller. Let me feel less and survive - when you feel weak and angry inside, Existentialism mode on. The question is how long. Sooner or later you will hurt somebody in self-defence.
The other thing is that you easily slip into pride/feeling superior this way. I know something you are not aware of.
