Doors co-founder Ray Manzarek dies at 74 in Germany



Ray Manzarek, keyboard player and founder member of the 1960s rock band The Doors, has died aged 74.

He formed the band with lead singer Jim Morrison in 1965 after a chance meeting in Venice Beach, Los Angeles.

If it had not been for Ray Manzarek, the Hammond B3 with a Leslie Cabinet would not have been the alpha/omega of rock music keyboards. I mean, granted a lot of jazz and other players like Booker T and Georgie Fame used Hammonds, but Manzarek made the B3 the definitive 'axe' and the Leslie the definitive 'stack'.

If and when I get posting privileges I will post some YouTubage to try and prove the point.

I build valve / tube amps for a hobby. I have my eye on building a Leslie replica, even though I am a shit keyboard player.
