Strange "bud" technique

I was browsing youtube in search of a song, when I came across a similarly titled video, being adventurous I watched it and discovered something unique. I personally have never seen anyone do this, mostly because I don't know many with the money or weed to try it; but this long hippie haired sir was smoking a joint made entirely of sticky bud. He had taken a nail, poked it into the long bud, compacted the whole nug from the outside carefully onto the nail, then removed the hardware and lit the end, to which he began puffing away without a care.

I don't know if that technique has a name, but it was news to me.
