How Should a Dudeist Approach Work

Hey Dudes. I've been wondering lately how a Dudeist should approach work (and if this has already been discussed I apologize). When I say work I just mean in general, school, occupation, etc.

I'll just throw my two cents in and say that I think we should do it from a very relaxed place.

In the book the Dude and the Zen Master, Jeff discusses how he likes to create from nothing, and I think something along those lines is a good way to do it. Go in with like an open, empty mind, and just create what needs to be created. That's just like, my opinion man, what do you guys think?

My approach; "is this, ah, what day is this?" At least that's my dream; I own my own business, a marketing company, and I work (literally) seven days a week (very UNdude of me). Fortunately I can sit on my lazy ass in my home office and work (I work at home) and do my thing in my robe if I want, or hell, role out naked if I want to. You gotta feed the monkey!

Interesting thread man! I work in IT at a college and although I'm not sure it suits Dudeism, Dudeism definitely helps me not get swept up in people's stress and keep a sense of humour. Most of the time...

It's a gig. Make it to Friday with as little drama as possible and don't let the paraquat get you down.

Education-wise we home educated our kids for a while, which allowed them to express their own vibe.

We never put any pressure at all on them to achieve, but always supported their efforts.

They now do really well at school, but not to please anyone else, just because they want to.

Been job-hunting for about three years now and haven't had a single place hire me. Luckily I have a roof over my head and a robe to chill in, I'm almost never without it, not since I got it last Christmas, so comfy

Bottom line though, any job is gonna have requirements and expectations that you have to fulfill if you want to keep feeding the monkey. I'd go about work the same way I went about school. Doing the best that I could while expending the least amount of effort I could get away with. Passed with A's and B's most of the time too, so there wasn't ever too much stress there.

Do what your boss wants you to do and keep your head as cool as you can in the process. Not every job has to be done with military speed and precision, but of course common sense will tell you what jobs take the highest priority in your work place. Do your thing, abide through the chaos that can come your way, then head home and listen to some whale songs (or what-have-you) to mellow out after stumbling back into the sweet salvation that is your domicile. Take it easy, man. l-)

I dunno, man, working for wages seems to me to be a highly overrated pastime. It exposes one to way too many Undudes, Antidudes, and generally fucked up human paraquats and makes it damnably difficult to just fuckin' Abide, man. But a Dude's gotta do what a Dude's gotta do to keep the bar stocked.

Myself, I'm not cut out for that shit. I gave it a whirl, didn't like it at all. Man, people take the most trivial shit so fucking seriously it's no wonder they're in perpetual crisis. I guess they keep their bars stocked, but then again they really have to in order to survive the shit they put themselves through every day.

I went the other way, started my own business with a vague, half baked plan to bootstrap it, and just stuck to it even when times were tight. There have been some tight times when the bar didn't get restocked at all and some difficult decisions had to be made, but, ya know, fuck it. Ya do whatcha gotta do 'cuz you'll never get to the beach if you stop swimming toward shore. On the up side, I don't have to work for 'quats and when one sneaks in because the fucking door opens outward I give fair warning that their aggression will not stand. Get right or get left, man. Those human paraquats just don't know how to take fair warning at face value or how to react when you tell them to take their asshole ways somewhere else. Thye probably don't learn a fucking thing by it, either, but it gets them out of my way so I don't worry about that shit. Let the crumb sniffers on the freelance sites deal with those assholes, I say.

So, shit. How should a Dudeist approach work? I don't know, man. Only if you really have to, I guess. The way I run my own gig is to be just as wickedly proficient as I am capable of so I can get a lot of shit done in the three and a half days each week that I devote to it, and to work at a relaxed pace because uptight thinking is really bad for software development. Bugs come from not thinking things through, and not thinking things through comes from being rushed and distracted, and being rushed and distracted comes from taking trivial shit way too fucking seriously.

Like you said, too many quats and non-dudes about you, and just the way you get money, you literally trade time for money. Now something about that is just off.

But yeah this question of how a Dudeist should approach work is pretty nagging, especially to me. I mean the whole idea of Dudeism is to live like the Dude, relaxed and what have you; he doesn't work at all, so reconciling his lack of..... uhhhh...... productivity with personal productivity is important because most people have to do work. Anyway though, I think one can be just as relaxed working as at any other time, I'm trying to disintegrate my wall of separation between leisure and work, that way it can be just as enjoyable and far out as just not doing anything. Well, most of the time.
