So if we really are a religion what I want to know is....

we're not incorporated as a 501c3 so still paying taxes on our (modest) income. i suppose if the money ever comes rolling in it would behoove us to go down that road. but it's also a pain in the ass with all the paperwork and organizational stuff (a board, who could sabotage the message before it's properly hatched, like in "tucker a man and his dream"). also, i'm not sure if local parishes would be able to be tax exempt - one might have to set up their own 501c3. there's a lot of conflicting info out there. i think both ULC and Scientology got in a lot of trouble for extending their tax exempt status to their priests and now don't do that.

Also, you would only be able to declare tax exemption for religious work - like officiating at a wedding. But if you had regular meetings in your house you could take some of that off your taxes. So yeah, complicated. Anybody got any leads they want to share here?

Qualifying Organizations

A religious, charitable or benevolent organization means any organization defined as a "registered charity" by the federal government under subsection 248(1) of the Income Tax Act (Canada) and which holds a charitable registration number issued by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
