Airbus details Smarter Skies vision for planes in 2050

Aeroplanes that take-off and prepare to land at much sharper angles than they do at present are among Airbus' latest industry forecasts.

The European jet-maker made the predictions in its Smarter Skies vision for air travel in 2050.

I'll pass this on to my flight sim community... looks pretty interesting!

Yeah.... That would pull a couple of "G's".  I had a ride in an F-16 once.  The angle and speed of take off was insane.  I'm excited for these!

Nice! Great aircraft....apart from that Hydrazene issue!

I had a flight in a Phantom F4m over Cyprus....best 42 minutes of my life! :)

Peace dude.
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

The F4m is one righteous plane! So is the F16... I'm jealous of both of you! I think if I ever got a ride in an F18, I could just die then and there! For now, this is the closest I'll ever get: http://www.jamesphotography.ca/flight_sim.html

.  Yeah....  I as an Aircraft Electrical/Environmental systems tech.  I had to deal with testing the emergency power unit.  Never got extra pay for hydrazine though....  I always wanted a an F-4 ride.  That would be loads of fun.

I still want to get a ride in an F-15.  I have heard those are even better.  I really wish I could have gotten more pictures and video of my ride though.

The f14's variable sweep wing is kinda cool as well... Worked for Tom Cruise.  ;)

Having worked on planes ruins movies for me. Especially Top Gun and Iron Eagle....  Haha.

How so? I'm honestly curious...

rev-jaholbrook

Well, for one you don't pull back on the throttle to go faster....  It's more like a boat in that you have to push forward.  Haha.  That and if you have seen Iron Eagle, there is a bomb they call the HADES bomb....  It is a center-line external fuel tank that was painted bright Orange....  Ruined all the fun for me.  Haha.

Hominid

I thought Iron Eagle was tacky anyways. In TG, the only time I recollect Cruise pulling back on the throttle was when he braked to let the "Mig" fly past him.  I'm not a trained pilot, but he did have his wings full forward for such a maneuver...  Or maybe I missed something you saw..?

rev-jaholbrook

Yeah....  The speed break thing he did when he pulled back also is bull.  The speed brakes are operated by a switch.  Haha.   He just throttled down.  I may have my details of exactly what he did a bit off.  It's been a bit since I have watched it.

Hominid

Ah well, flipping a switch isn't as dramatic... to paraphrase Randall Wallace (who wrote Braveheart): you can't let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I watched an F18 demo where the pilot did a 360 degree box loop, essentially drawing a vertical square in the sky. Each "corner" he took was just like that maneuver in TG... huge AOA and deceleration.  Fun to watch...

Totally agree... as an avionics engineer dealing with Flight guidance and control and autopilots etc I can't help but notice every little bit of "artistic licence" that creeps in!

But I'm a far worse passenger on an airline! :)
