sorry ed-- cakes isn't backseat typing, nor does he have plans to return as far as i know... and that's a damn crying shame really, because i think any important discussion needs dissent in order to bring ideas into sharper clarity and strength.

I certainly didn't want him backseat typing, or contributing in your name (I'm glad you're you, and to be honest, that's unmistakable!), I was just a'hopin' he was a'watching, y'know, from up there :D

well, i'm glad to know our writing styles are distinct. i must say, i believe i have the upper hand when it comes to sentence structure  ;)

Hey Busmum, thanks for sticking around despite the departure of Cakey. Let him know he's welcome back anytime.
I'll tell you what I'm blathering about...

Busmum

i have expressed the sentiment to him:

"...There is a place set for you at our table, if you will choose to join us..."

... from one of the best books i have ever enjoyed:

Ok, I get it...the thread went way off topic and...and...? Ok..so the frickin thread went off topic...ok...ok... don't get it?
But then I'm just the janitor here...trying to keep the spammers out and the pad unspoiled. 8)

Hey man I'm just the stamp licker here until folks can get my realm of thinking. I hope I was not the one who caused the cakebelly departure though (Now I'm feeling a bit guilty of adding fuel to a fire?). If I am stepping out of the norm to the dudeism way someone message me and help me get a clue. I'm sitting on my "Abidin Rug" deeply puzzled and befuddled.

~thinkingdude

as i expressed to revgms, you shouldn't feel responsible for someone else's actions-- only cakes can be held accountable for what he did and said... and what's done is done.

there were several things going on at once, and they occurred in your thread... that is all. cakes had his own bonfire going, and brought his own gasoline.  8)

You didn't cause anything dude, it just happened to be in your thread.  As far as stepping out of the norm... there really isn't a norm.  They only thing that made me take notice was the heavy use of the word "troll".  That carries such a negative connotation on the internet that I was surprised to see it around here being used towards regular posters.
From what is Dudeism trying to liberate us?Thinking that's too uptight.

To what state of being is Dudeism trying to bring us? Just taking it easy, man.

By what means does Dudeism attempt do this? Abiding.

No dude, you had nothing to do with cakes leaving...it was mostly my doing..I lit the spark and fanned the flames.
He was too good for the likes of us anyway.
He may be a little bit of a reactionary, but Cakebelly is a very special and talented dude...I consider it an honor to be able to call him friend.

Coming from the Colbert Nation, I gotta tell ya, this is super light duty stuff here. Over there we get real bonnafide trolls. There have been many many bannings, deleted threads and posts, the FBI even got involved once. Our sister board just came under systematic attack by a troll.

I moderate over there, we enjoy an open forum with lively discourse, censorship is the furthest from our minds, most things are fair game that would be deleted at other sites. We mods tend to just manage the flow, move or split threads so conversations can continue in the proper place. Clean up spam, something we have experience with here, and keep it in legal boundaries. Can't let people treat objects like women and no overt threats of physical violence. Good moderation is not about censoring, it is about protecting and enhancing the forum community.

But the CN is a very different community than here, we had an all out forum war just last year, it was intense. I let my inner Walter free there, even though I am well known as the resident Dudeist/Buddhisty guy, it is simply the best place to have a knock down drag out debate. Left, right or center you can argue your point of view and call the others idiots, but bring fax and sauce, or the trolls will eat you alive.

Hey, that's what I wanted to say, er put me down as doubling the sentiment.

I just think he bailed too early, we hardly got into the meat of the matter, and his opinions are valued, even if we don't always agree.

Then maybe you should have read more of the posts around the forum and got a general understanding of the way we do things around here before you got on your high horse and started demanding that everyone steps into line with your way of thinking! You are not in the Navy now and no one has to do things "your way" mate.

I'm still pissed off that a thread has been locked and you are the one I'm pissed off at!

Ok, well, maybe ThinkingDude just needs to be eased into the flow around here.  I can understand tensions are running a little high at the moment, but any pointing of fingers, from or toward anyone won't solve anything.

And, you know what, I just started a thread of peace and calm today: http://dudeism.com/smf/index.php?topic=2599.msg22245#new

It takes one side to step down from this sort of tension to help cool the fire.  I was a little pee'd that ThinkingDude had gone on his anti-troll campaign, but with some gentle, peaceful, enlightening talk on both sides I think we calmed that over at the jacking thread: http://dudeism.com/smf/index.php?topic=2591.msg22255;topicseen#msg22255  I'm over the troll-calling thing, we're settling on that issue, and I'm even over the bit where he's only interested in knowing about people from the US (yes, that's a jest) ;)

Now, the locking subject... I don't see it as such a big deal.  Afterall, we're still talking.  No one has been censored, it's just that the flow has been redirected away from what was fast becoming a flood plain.  To be honest, I don't want to revisit that exact conversation anytime soon because a) there's a lot of personal hurt in there, and b) I'm no so happy about the lengths I felt I needed to go to to defend myself and resolve my personal issue.  I won't go back and edit those posts, I won't self-censor, what's said is said, but, hells, I don't want to talk around those posts.  I'm happy talking in this post, or any other about how we move on.

So, I'm just saying, Ceaser, I think a few softer words will serve better here to resolve this than adding more fuel to the fire

I've been on the end of this blamegame thing this week, and it's only reinforced my position to disarm and let things be.  I understand you're upset about some things that have gone down here, but I'll hope you see your way to holding back a little, show some of the nice-guy Ceaser we all know and love.  I know you have the name of a war-monger, but, we all know you're not that guy :)

Peace, friends?

i dont know, i was offline awhile and was a wee bit floored to see that there had been strife amongst us.
i think 'marvelous' brings us( at least ME) back to the dude'tude; simple, and almost as good as saying 'vagina' to bring things back to the simplicity and ease we all enjoy.

Caesar dude

Hey Ed. I hear you and I understand what you're saying and I will leave it if you will do the same with reference to continuing to mention the hurt you feel about the incident. However I have one further thing to say to Mr. Deep Thinking Dude. and it is this....

He stated
QuoteAny forum that you adide in has the same thing going on with trolls and such.
We haven't noticed any Trolls on this board until he arrived...a troll is there to spread dissension and upset amongst the forum members..maybe stir up some reactions and generally annoy other forum members...sound familiar???? oh And if the cap fits then wear it Thinking Dude!

So with that off my chest can we now play nice and get the dudeism Forum back to where it was last week, a place where consenting adults can say what they like where they like without anyone "running off to teacher" to complain that the big boys are ignoring him and won't let him play.

Peace dudes.
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

Heard and understood Ceaser, old bean!

I think a group shaking of hands is in order.  Or, if you're into the whole touchy-feely thing, a group hug :D

Just a thought on "thread jacking." In many cases threads go for a long time more or less maintaining a focused subject, but it is not unusual for a thread to "morph" into new, and sometimes varied topics, that only partially relate to the original topic or not at all. We have all seen this happen.

If a thread has been deliberately hi-jacked, we can fix it in several ways, including locking it, kicking out a troll, asking a dude to stop such behavior, etc., but most of the time, and almost 99.99% of the time here on the Dudeism board, trolling has not been a problem. I think we have only had one actual troll, some un-dude calling himself "Waldo" who Ollie gave the boot many moons ago. He hasn't been heard from since as far as I know.

So, let new thoughts and opinions flow in a thread, you never know where a thread will creatively go; perhaps new ideas, concepts and observations. And, I think everyone here is very dude like, mellow and knows how to abide without having to be told. This is an awesome group of dudes! All of you are great people to know!

Anyway, lets all keep our minds limber and open. Yes, there are rules, this is not Nam, but this is not fascism either.

OK, now I'm going bowling.
