'Surrender': Japan Nuclear Workers Abandon Stricken Plant

FUKUSHIMA, Japan -- Japan suspended operations to keep its stricken nuclear plant from melting down Wednesday after surging radiation made it too dangerous to stay.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the workers dousing the reactors in a frantic effort to cool them needed to withdraw.

"A part of the containment vessel is broken and it seems like the vapour is coming out from there. So... [it] appears to be that vapour is coming out from the broken part."

Banjo Dude

Meekon, I laughed aloud upon seeing the caption overlaying Oz on that map.

Should we Diaspora Irish be thankful that th' Old Sod (Or Boston, for that matter, heh) is too wee on that map to be labeled "Still Full Of Irishmen?"

Oh, and if we elect Palin over here, (oh, I just threw up in my mouth a little) and the hypothetical then-President-Elect Palin's first name is not Michael, I am going to go to DC and self-immolate.

Not as protest, mind you, but simply because I would no longer wish to continue not being on fire.  I've been not on fire for a good thirty-six years now, and it's been, you know, a good run, but four years of that moose-fucking semibreve would just not be worth waiting through, despite the promise of a fun post-apocalyptic "Escape From New York"-type aftermath.

Y'know, I don't think I'd even need gasoline and matches;  I do believe my rage at such a situation would be sufficient to spontaneously combust.

(Yes, I used "semibreve" as an insult.  Deal with it.  'Sides, it's kinda funny if you can read music.)

Banjo Dude

In Further Fucking Terrifying News:

Apparently, on a scale of "OK" (1, maybe 0) to "Aieee! FUCKING CHERNOBYL! :o" (7) the Japan business is now being rated a 5.

So, I guess it could be worse? :-\

... but it could be much, much muchmuchmuchmuch better.

I've been trying to stave off the urge to call my aunt in San Francisco to ask her, "So, Auntie, any super-powers yet?"

Caesar dude

Quotefour years of that moose-fucking semibreve

Careful dude there's a beverage here!  ;D
Love is like a butterfly it goes where it pleases and it pleases where it goes. :)

You want beverage-imperilment? I got your peril right here.

Check this crazy shit out,

The Huge Goddam Japan-Fucking Godzilla-Creating Earthquake of '11
(that's what I'm calling it now)

MOVED THE  WHOLE  FUCKING  PLANET'S  FUCKING AXIS OF FUCKING ROTATION.

Yes.

The goddam Earth's axis shifted some handful of inches, and now a day is approximately 1.26 x 10-6 seconds shorter.

I know, it doesn't matter unless you're trying to, like, hit Mars with a spaceship or something, but it's interesting, isn't it?  Oh, and please excuse all the caps and bold and shit.  Seems the sort of thing, if I were talking to you about it in person, that whole line would come out as yelling. :)

Caesar dude

QuoteMOVED THE  WHOLE  FUCKING  PLANET'S  FUCKING AXIS OF FUCKING ROTATION.

Errm not exactly: The following is a quote from a scientist I know in response to this claim.

"As well as the 2010 Chile quake. It is indeed mathematical, as we do not have the sensitivity of equipment to measure it. Also, it is important to note that these are shifts in the figure axis, that is how the mass is distributed about the main axis, it is not actually a shift in the spin axis."

We haven't been shifted off of our axis if we had there would be a lot more noticeable effects...no ...seriously....a lOT more effects. like maybe spinning off into the sun and being unable to communicate via the interweb.

Another quote... "We had all that hype about the earth axis shifting at the time of the 2004 tsunami event. It turns out (and I suspect it's the same for this event) that it's based on sheer mathematical ESTIMATION. No satellite had any instruments which had sufficient resolution to measure any detectable shift."

Don't believe the gutter press...or at least check out the facts...and I mean the FACTS! before regurgitating pseudo science. The disaster is bad enough without having to make shit up.

Am I wrong? I don't give a shit.

Sleep well dude..... ;)

My source is a NASA JPL scientist, via NPR.  That Flatow guy's show.

Here's what nasa.gov says:
http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/japanquake/earth20110314.html

FWIW, he definitely said "MAY HAVE," which I admittedly omitted (and was just coming back to edit to correct. whoops, too late.  busted!)

So, yeah.  Not exactly "gutter press," but you're right, I should have had my bogometer running.  Sorry, my bad!

(at least I didn't blame it on spacemen! :P )

Oh, and I'm still calling it "The Huge Goddam Japan-Fucking Godzilla-Creating Earthquake of '11 "  ;)

Japan raises nuclear alert level

Japan has raised the alert level at its quake-damaged nuclear plant from four to five on a seven-point international scale of atomic incidents.

The crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi site, previously rated as a local problem, is now regarded as having "wider consequences".

The UN says the battle to stabilize the plant is a race against time.

** Check it out......   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12783832

So far, Chernobyl is the only seven-rated incident in nuclear history.

Level five is defined as an "accident with wider consequences".

Ok not gutter press but I reiterate it's a theoretical computation.

Richard Goss NASA JPL states:

Quoteapplied a complex model to perform a preliminary theoretical calculation of how the Japan earthquake?the fifth largest since 1900?affected Earth's rotation.

And again if it happened it's so tiny we won't notice it at all.

Oh and btw I like this:

Banjo Dude

Oh, totally theoretical, but so's lots of neat stuff - Hawking radiation, dark matter, the Horrendous Space Kablooie, dark energy, leprechauns, string theory, quantum electrodynamics, "haggis is a food."

Of course, some of those things are more theoretical than others.  I, for one, don't believe in dark energy.

Or haggis.

and, just in case anyone needs a refresher in HSK theory:
