The other alternative is to get hold of Micro$oft VirtualPC, run up a copy of that on your PC (it creates a virtual machine that you can install an operating system on but the PC doesnt exist so even if it gets infected your machine wont) and do all your browsing through the virtual machine, then don't save any of the changes, or regularly delete the VR PC and any infection you get will be removed with the VR PC.

It just happens I'm one of those dispicable individuals that likes his job. (Yes thats a JOB there).

Also try VirtualBox (IBM freebee).
This is good because it can run 64bit systems on a PC with 32bit operating system (as long as your processor can handle it).

I got sick and tired of fixing my wife's laptop after the kids and her would
bring it to it's knees with spy ware and virus's over and over. I installed
Linux and got her a new one. Which she'll bugger up over and over.
I'm not really an evangelist and don't recommend it to anyone who
hasn't got a bit of geek to them. It has some bumps. Took me a couple
days to get wireless working right and it's not as intuitive as Windoze
for most stuff. But it's rock solid and impervious to viruses.
Once I get it clicking I don't change it much and it serves my needs just fine.
But anybody who doesn't have experience with Linux or Unix will need to
either find the inner geek a little bit or know a dude.

I have been heard to say "Linux is like windows back when it used to belong to us Geeks!"

A bit of patience and the install disk in your hand just in case. I found Ubuntu Netbook needed very little twiddling with, a nice usable setup straight from the install.

Some other flavours gave me real problems (Redhat is so breakable, especially when I get playing).

The linux install is one thing that has improve remarkably.
I remember installing from Slackware and it was a major hassle.
And hardware support was spotty.
I just downloaded the DVD image of Suse 11 and put it in the drive and restarted.
An hour later i was up and running.
I haven't been running linux in a few years and the one thing I found is that
the KDE desktop has gone backwards a lot. Gnome is pretty good now.
As I say I just get everything set up for mail and internet and tunes and a bit
of development work and I'm good to go.
The only hickup was trying every imaginable combo of values in the
network config app to get wireless running. I found that once I dropped KDE and
reinstalled to Gnome the network tool was a lot better and I was set.
It's not quite as turnkey as windows but it's free and without hassle once your
all set up.

Linux, especially Ubuntu or kUbuntu (just types of Linux useful for people changing from Windows). I was so fed up with Vista I got with my laptop that I even considered buying fucking 7, which is apparently better, but I thought - why the fuck should I pay them another ?100+ for next piece of shit?! That forced me to look at Linux (it's absolutelly free). I knew about it, but I was sure it's complicated and you need a book to use it. Not true - it installs on it's own, if you don't know shit you just leave it as it is and click next, next, finish. Works perfectly, has Firefox, OpenOffice which creates/edits M$ Office documents easily. Starts in 1/10 the time of Vista and when it starts it works, you click and it runs, not like my Vista - I can see my desktop, but if I start Firefox I wait another 5 minutes. Now: no viruses (no anti-virus, memory eating software), no disk defragmentation, no fuss or problems. I, personally, use it next to Vista (just install Linux on a computer with Vista and it will do it automatically - it adds neat menu to choose the system), but only because I like to play some games every now and then and they tend not to work on Linux. There's something called WINE - a Windows emulator - which can run loads of Windows games and programs. Check the net to see what works, but you probably won't need it. Most of the commercial programs from greedy Bill have their free and BETTER substitutes on Linux. Go for it, mate - you won't regret. Maybe it will be pain at first - some thigs are different and you need to get used to them, or maybe need to get un-used to Micro$oft's way, but it's worth it. I can't imagine going back to fucking Vista and I suffer every time I have to use it.

Also, dude, IE is not the preferred internet viewer. Windows can be sort of safe if you have anti-virus soft (AVG is ok, I use Avast! - you have to register, but it's free) and firewall, but I think it's better to use 3rd party, not Microshit's one. I use Comodo - it's also free. And first of all - don't use IE - it's full of holes and the easiest thing to break into.

LOL! That could have been me a few years ago! They mostly (kept) me down in the basement lab and only let me out for feedings.
Kept me hidden when the tours came through.

We work in an office that is out the back of the main library, in the middle of the building, with no number on the door (even the corridor and storage cupboards have numbers and a notice of who works there if it's an office). The cleaner who does our office went on holiday for a week so the replacement didn't clean because they didn't realise we were here.
