Er, traditionally (UK, anyway) bonfire 'guys' symbolize figures of public contempt; I guess it's okay, though 'cos the Dude effigy is going to be 'affectionately burnt' - oh well, each to their own.

Surely, in this scenario, it would be more appropriate to burn an effigy of a Nihilist, a fascist from Malibu or even the Big Lebowski.

Though linked to Guy Fawkes the effigy is actually the Pope that we traditionally burn at this time of year (Fawkes was a Papist Assassin trying to kill the Parliament and crown to have it replaced by a more Catholic regime).

I guess I am coming off as something of a killjoy.

I'm hardly indulging in semantics - they are symbolically burning the Dude (symbol, effigy, whatever); I just wanted to know why the Dude and not, say Jesus Quintana or a Nihilist. Damn it!

Abideist

I would say the answer to that COULD BE thought as a release of sorts. Like, we burn the dude (a reflection of ourselves) as a way to say "I'm good with letting it all go"?

I wish I lived in california just so I could go to this event, I just so happen to be stuck in Florida where literally nothing happens except tourists to Disney World.
You're damned if you dude, you're damned if you don't.

And it could all be taken with the same spirit as the Zen Buddhist axiom:

"If you see the Buddha on the street, kill him!"

The idea being that you would only be in awe of Buddha should you meet him and not practice what he preached.

So "If you see the Dude on the Street, set fire to him!".

Oddly enough I was going to use that axiom as an avenue of discussion but then I thought why the feck does it matter(?) I was just a little perturbed at the thought of this Burning Dude thang becoming an annual (Dude-wide) event  - but without any clear idea of what it means. But then I got better  ;D

Busmum and I toyed with the idea of driving over to the event and liberating the tinder-Dude (replacing it with a tinder-nihilist) and then heading for the hills to release tinder-Dude into the wild. However, the thought of driving through LA at that time and on that day was enough to inspire a joint "fuck it". Any Forum Dudes going - DB, don't you live close-by?

I don't see why this wouldn't be good thing to happen yearly..Or quarterly for that matter.

Rev. Dave Strong needs help with an invocation for the Burning Day event:

"Okay, this one has been a lot for the Reverend Dude to think about. Luckily, I?m adhering to a pretty strict drug regimen to keep my mind limber. After weighing the ins, the outs, and what-have-yous, I?ve decided to burn an effigy of the Dude?s car, the Gran Duderino!

?Well they finally did it. They killed my fucking car.?

It was the first suggestion from the Dudely Lama and I should have listened to the wisdom of his Dudness! It?s also consistent with the movie, funny, and easy to understand.

My biggest concern is confusing anyone, especially general public. There could be more festivals next year and I?m not sure photos of flaming human effigies on the local news is the best image for Dudeism. Burning cars on the other hand is non-offensive and may even hailed by the extreme enviros!

However, I?m still a little stuck on the invocation and would like to hear thoughts on the symbolism of the death of the Dudes car. What do you Dudes think??"

Copied from the The Dudespaper - perhaps suggestions could be posted there: http://dudespaper.com/the-burning-dude-festival.html/

I suggested that he should post his request here but he hasn't - is there some animosity - just asking - between Facebook Dudes and Forum Dudes that I am unaware of (as a relative newbie)? Why don't they come on here? Perhaps animosity is the wrong word - distrust?

...or, maybe like the difference between the bus station terminal and your livingroom?

fuck it. i'm off to bowling.

Reverend Dude Dave

You Dudes are just a little bit ahead of me!

I really appreciate the comments and will post photos today when we finish building the Gran Tornino effigy! In the mean time, I do need some thoughts on the symbolism of the death of the Dude's car to help me with my invocation. The Dudely Lama gave me some great feedback already and I bet you Dudes can enlighten me a bit as well.

Keeping an open mind and adhering to a strict drug regimen...

;D Fuckin' A! Welcome to the forum, Rev. Dude Dave, nice to have ya here - we'll try and have a go with this invocation thing - abide!
