Back to Work
« on: June 13, 2018, 12:21:33 PM »
After being off of work for 10 months I'm back to my old job. The pay is pretty good, the medical benefits are astronomically good, but I just dont wanna do it anymore. The reason is, well, I'm getting older (50...give or take) and this job is just beating me down.  I told my special lady friend that I think I might just sign up to be an Uber/Lyft driver or something and go on her health care plan when we get married in 2 months.  I hate having to wake up at 3am to go to this job and come home at 4pm dead tired, I hate having to take pain relievers all day long (I have a bottle of Aleve next to my bed and the first thing I do is take one) and i just wanna say fuck it.  I'm not looking to be a bum, just willing to settle for less if it means my mind, body and spirit are more aligned.  I think my special lady friend would be cool with it...I guess I just got used to the whole routine of it all over the course of my life.  Maybe it's time to move on....I dunno.  Oh well, thanks for letting me ramble.  side note: I work in an industry that does NOT allow me to smoke a J at all...EVER, so I cant adhere to a strict drug regimen.  It would be nice to be able to just relax, well, thanks again Dudes.
Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber

You gotta feed the monkey.
On paper my gig is the nuts.
I make good money and nobody hassles me at all.
And I hate it. But I've had plenty of on paper great jobs that I eventually end up hating.
I've come to the conclusion that it's not the job. It's me.
And that cool.
I just honor my wander lust and move on to the next thing that will be cool for a while and eventually suck ass.

I do keep my eye out for the prime gig that will truly float my boat. But to be honest. I think it's the white buffalo.
Unless I hit it big in music and get driven around in a big party barge on wheels where I basically work a couple hours every other day or so before a crowd of adoring fans I'm just condemned to embrace the suck.
I'm too old to make it in sports. So ...

I feel your pain. I work in a foundry and it's dead hot this time of year. I'm 36 but at the end of the day I feel like I'm in my 70s with the way my knees creak and pop when I sit and stand. I don't have that problem on my days off though.

But that's part of the reason why I want to start my own Dudeist chapel. Work for myself while helping others. No more long days of being on my feet in a hot as balls factory processing molten aluminum. The pay is good and the benefits are phenomenal. But there's more to life than just grinding out a paycheck every week.

Oh boy does that sound familiar.
I did nearly a decade working factory work.
Fiberglass. Which also has very hot ovens.
Hot enough to melt silica to molten glass.
In every way it was on paper worse than every job I left there for.
And paid way less.
Yet I worked at that longer than any white collar job I've ever had.
I actually liked working nights. I found that while the physical conditions were worse there, the psychic conditions were better.
Less BS.

Well it's been 3 weeks since I went back to the old gig feeding the monkey.  I'm in a constant state of sleep deprivation and pretty strong pain.  I keep a bottle of NSAID's on my night stand and have to take a couple before my feet hit the floor just to make sure the pain is under control enough to do my job.  In 5 weeks I'm taking off to the Bahamas for 2 full weeks to make it official with my special lady friend of 7 years.  After that, I will probably start looking for something much less physically demanding.  At my age I am not sure what's worse, the physical demands of heavy lifting, or the alarm clock that goes off at 2:45 am every morning.  I've found that sleep deprivation exacerbates every other issue.
Fortunately, I'm adhering to a pretty strict, uh, drug, uh, regimen to keep my mind, you know, uh, limber

That doth sucketh verily. I hear ya, dude. My constant pain bugs me like crazy, but I gotta work. I'll never be able to retire, so maybe one day I can get a cushy job somewhere!
