Altar
« on: January 07, 2017, 10:06:57 PM »
Does anyone else keep an altar in their home? I actually have a couple. One dedicated to Hotei, the laughing Buddhist monk, and one dedicated to Dudeism, "Bob", and various other idealisms and deities. It really brings a room together tbh.

Don't take this the wrong way but that sort of thing might scare off potential special lady friends.
I could be wrong but generally speaking an altar of any sort leads to speculation about a pit in the basement and some unusual taxidermy activities.

Depends on the lady friend I guess. My girlfriend has no objections. She has her own corner with stuff too.

Most people will have an altar in their home or other special place. Few will think of it as an altar, though it is still a special place of contemplation. How many have a photo of family on their mantelpiece or a cabinet with memorabilia of times past? A picture on a wall that has particular meaning for them? Some will have an altar that is clearly designed as an altar of course. But it is not a question of form it is a question of meaning and use that I believe defines an altar in the wider sense.

In my garden I have a statue of the Buddha. Nothing special about it, just a cheap one I picked up at our local garden center. It sits on a low plinth by a small pond under a tree. It was not set up as an altar or place of worship, just as a garden feature. But over time it has become a place where when stressed I step out of the house to look at and think or Abide if you will. It may not bring a room together but it sure does bring my life together.  :)

That sounds really nice. I sometimes carry a crystal or talisman with me when I go sit in the park. Helps me concentrate on my meditating or thoughts.

Way to go man! I have a framed copper Sri Yantra madala, a small framed Hindu Ganesha picture, a few hawk feathers, my ordination certificate, Buddy Christ statue, music constantly playing, and incense. This MAY change depending on what "frequency" or "vibes" I guess you can say I identify with on the day or week.

I try to keep my altars somewhat aligned with my personality. The one next to my bed has a cartoon version of the Dude, a framed "Bob" Dobbs", a bobble head tiki, a small figure of Gadget Hackwrench, and a few other little trinkets. The one in my kitchen is dedicated to Hotei the laughing Buddha. I also have portraits of my favorite spiritual leaders hanging on my walls.
